Black sand, volcanic pools and trails through the Laurissilva give Seixal its many facets. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering the coastal areas, hiking routes and local traditions as separate priorities: their conditions and features vary.
Coast, beach and volcanic pools
Praia do Porto de Abrigo do Seixal is a black-sand beach. Green mountains rise behind it, and clear Atlantic water washes over the shore. There are showers and a beach bar on site, and it is also possible to rent kayaks. As these services can change, it’s best to check what is currently available before your visit.
Piscinas Naturais do Seixal, also known as Poças das Lesmas, are natural pools in the volcanic rock near Praia da Laje. Dark rocks contrast with the turquoise Atlantic water. Large waves can suddenly form near the pools: observe sea conditions and stay away from exposed areas. Praia da Laje is also known as Praia da Jamaica; it is an unguarded beach in the parish of Seixal.
Distinct from these are the extensive volcanic swimming pools of Clube Naval do Seixal. Facilities include restrooms, showers, a bar with a terrace and a sunbathing area with loungers. Kayaks and diving equipment can be rented at these pools. Check the current availability of facilities and rental services before your visit.
Hiking trails through the Laurissilva
The access trail to PR 14 Levada dos Cedros begins in the parish of Seixal. The first 400 metres of the trail are there; the rest of the route runs through the parish of Ribeira da Janela. The route passes through the Laurissilva forest, which was classified as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1999. Heath tunnels, wooden bridges and viewpoints are among the features of PR 14.
Vereda da Ribeira Funda comes with an explicitly demanding condition: it lies entirely within the parish of Seixal and is suitable only for experienced hikers in good physical condition. Vereda da Terra Chã offers a different insight into the plant life. After the ascent begins, the trail passes through Laurissilva vegetation, including laurel, Vinhático, Folhado and tree heath.
Chão da Ribeira and Véu da Noiva
Chão da Ribeira lies in a large valley above the parish of Seixal. Traditional agricultural storage huts shape the landscape there. The area is also a starting point for Vereda da Cavaca, Caminho das Voltas a Terra Chã and activities such as canyoning. Chão da Ribeira therefore brings together landscapes, architectural features and various activities, without implying any particular itinerary.
Véu da Noiva waterfall can also be viewed from two perspectives: as a viewpoint and as a geological feature. Miradouro do Véu da Noiva is on the old road between São Vicente and Seixal. From there, visitors can see a powerful waterfall plunging from a vegetated slope towards the sea. Geologically, Véu da Noiva is the hanging mouth of Ribeira de João Delgado; it was formed by the rapid retreat of the coastline due to vertical erosion.
Local traditions and maritime culture
Panelo connects Seixal with a culinary tradition: the stew is prepared or celebrated in Chão da Ribeira in January. The Panelo festival stems from a tradition among young people from Seixal. Those interested in local customs will find a seasonal occasion here that differs clearly from the coastal and landscape attractions described as available year-round.
The Regata de Canoas Tradicionais do Norte celebrates Madeira’s maritime culture and helps preserve the heritage of traditional canoes. In its 35th edition in July 2026, the approximately eight-kilometre route ran from Cais do Seixal to Cais do Porto Moniz. If you are planning for a future edition, check the dates of the event in question.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Seixal, you can start by setting your priorities: coastal scenery and pools, hiking trails or local traditions. The attractions offer different ways to shape your stay; for excursions and seasonal events, it’s worth checking the relevant conditions and dates in advance.
