Jardim do Mar combines a striking coastal landscape with surfing and a rich local history. The village lies on a fajã sheltered by imposing cliffs. At the entrance to the parish is the Miradouro do Jardim do Mar, which offers a detailed view of the typical village. The viewpoint provides a starting point for various discoveries: the coast and its surfing culture, paths shaped by agriculture, and historic buildings. In Jardim do Mar, you can experience several facets of a place whose character is defined by more than just the sea.

Between Dramatic Cliffs and the Atlantic

Surfing in Jardim do Mar is recommended for advanced and expert surfers. At the same time, the spot is considered a favourite for catching swells from the North Atlantic. Those interested in the sport can use this as a clear guide to the level of experience required; surfing is a distinctive part of the village’s character.

Praia do Portinho offers a different perspective on the coast. It consists of basalt shingle and has a pontoon and a ramp that make it easier for bathers and athletes to access the sea. Check the local conditions before planning a visit. The Praia do Portinho area has already been selected as a venue for various national and international competitions. Here, the coast is not just a landscape, but also a place for a range of activities.

Paths Through the Cultural Landscape

The PR 20 – Vereda do Jardim do Mar connects Prazeres with Jardim do Mar and runs between agricultural terraces supported by stone walls. The 1.9-kilometre walking route is estimated to take 1 hour and 30 minutes. It is currently marked as closed; check its status before planning a hike. The terraces and their walls give the route an agricultural character: as well as connecting the two villages, it also offers a view of the landscape shaped by human hands.

At Sítio das Roseiras, right at the start of the path connecting Jardim do Mar with Prazeres, stands the Moinho de Água. The recently restored mill, near the Miradouro do Jardim do Mar, was once used to grind grain grown in the parish and its surroundings. Taken together, the mill and terraces point to different stages: growing the grain and processing it in the past.

Chapels, Parish Church and Local History

The parish’s history dates back to the 18th century: on 15 November 1734, a curacy was established in Jardim do Mar. It was based at the existing chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, which was completely rebuilt in 1786. During the church’s reconstruction, the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade served as the parish seat. The two chapels thus mark different stages in the local religious history.

The parish church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário is considered a 20th-century replica of Notre-Dame de Paris. The architectural heritage also includes Quinta da Piedade, also known as Solar de Nossa Senhora da Piedade: a Madeiran country house with a chapel. These buildings add an architectural perspective to the landscape and paths, without reducing the local history to a single building.

The ruins of the old Engenho are also among the historic traces of Jardim do Mar. They are regarded as symbolic evidence of the village’s centuries-old past. Together with the history of the church and the mill, they broaden the view from religious buildings to past work and local history.
