Vila Franca De Xira lies on the Tagus, surrounded by the fertile Lezíria plains. Its landscape stretches from the vast estuary to historic sites that reveal different chapters of the region. Visitors looking to combine nature and cultural heritage will find two perspectives here: the birdlife of the wetlands and the history of a river landscape, also reflected in its buildings, boats and festive traditions.
Wetlands and birdwatching
The Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve (Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo) covers approximately 14,415 hectares. It includes estuary waters, Mouchões, salt pans, agricultural land and cork oak landscapes. As an important European area for wintering waterbirds, winter is a significant season for its natural environment. The landscape brings together a variety of habitats rather than showing just one type of waterfront.
EVOA includes 70 hectares of freshwater wetlands with different habitats and water depths that attract estuarine and breeding birds. More than 200 bird species can be observed there, including migratory birds and breeding birds of the Tagus Estuary; the number of species may vary depending on the survey period. Four observation towers, two photography hides and other viewing points are located along a five-kilometre trail. This provides different perspectives on the birdlife. A nocturnal raptor experience includes a two-hour observation tour in an electric vehicle through the Lezíria; the programme is seasonal.
Access to EVOA is through the Portão do Cardal, next to the Ponte Marechal Carmona. Transfers from Vila Franca de Xira or Benavente railway stations may be available, subject to prior confirmation. If you plan this experience, it is best to check in advance whether a transfer is available.
Historic landscape and buildings
Monte dos Castelinhos extends over more than ten hectares at a natural pass. Via the valley of the Rio Grande da Pipa, this pass connects the banks of the Tagus with the interior of the Lisbon Peninsula. The hill is home to a well-preserved urban complex from the Roman Republican period. The combination of the landscape and archaeological site offers a distinctive way to explore the area's history.
Another historic route is the section of the Rota Histórica das Linhas de Torres in Vila Franca De Xira, which includes the themed trail “Defesa do Tejo.” Alto do Senhor da Boa Morte is a natural viewpoint overlooking the Tagus, the Lezírias and Vila Franca de Xira. It is also home to medieval anthropomorphic tombs and the ruins of Solar dos Ataíde. Here, views and traces of history come together in a single place.
Churches and collections also tell stories of different eras. Igreja da Misericórdia de Vila Franca de Xira was founded in the 16th century. Its significant tilework ensemble, dating from 1760, depicts the Works of Mercy. King Sebastião had Igreja do Mártir Santo São Sebastião built in 1576 because of the plague of 1569; in July 2001, it was converted into a museum section for sacred art. Celeiro da Patriarcal was built in the mid-18th century and has been classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest) since 2009.
The Museu do Neo-Realismo has a documentation centre specialising in Neorealism. Casa-Museu Mário Coelho offers insight into the 40-year career of the bullfighter from Vila Franca de Xira and displays photographs, trophies and bullfighting costumes. Praça de Toiros Palha Blanco was inaugurated on 30 September 1901 and has hosted concerts, carnival parades, balls and film screenings. Festa do Colete Encarnado began in July 1932 to honour the campino and people working in agriculture, as well as to raise money for the local fire brigades.
The Tagus as a cultural connection
Barco Varino Liberdade is a traditional Tagus boat incorporated into the municipal cultural heritage collection, and it offers outings and cruises on routes connected to the river and nature. It was built in Abrantes in 1945, is 18 metres long, has a gross tonnage of 40 tonnes and carries two sails. These details make the boat a vivid part of the river's history, beyond its excursions. The leisure marina of União Desportiva Vilafranquense is a riverside mooring for water-based leisure activities and is close to public transport.
