When looking for accommodation in Turcifal, the trails and cultural sites offer practical points of reference for planning your trip. The Eco-Caminho runs from Turcifal to the summit area of Serra do Socorro, where you’ll also find an Iron Age fortified settlement and the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro. This can help you decide whether trails, scenery or cultural heritage should shape your days of exploring.

Trails between Turcifal and Serra do Socorro

The Eco-Caminho connects Turcifal with the summit area of Serra do Socorro and is about 5.7 kilometres long. There are three birdwatching spots along the trail. It also passes Quinta do ManjapĂŁo, Capela da Cadriceira and the water spring of Serra do Socorro. The route therefore links several named points over a specific distance.

At 22 kilometres, the Rota dos Encantos is considerably longer than the Eco-Caminho. It starts near Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena in Turcifal. It is not signposted, so you’ll need a map, leaflet or GPS navigation to find your way. The Free Trail Socorro e Archeira, by contrast, is a signposted running route through the distinctive paths of the protected landscape. It starts and ends at the PPLSSA Interpretive Centre in Cadriceira.

Landscape and environmental education

The Paisagem Protegida Local das Serras do Socorro e Archeira (PPLSSA) covers about 1,192 hectares and lies mainly within the parishes of Turcifal and UniĂŁo das Freguesias de Dois Portos e Runa. The landscape provides a setting for a range of natural and cultural themes, which you can explore separately or together when planning your trip.

The Centro Interpretativo da Paisagem Protegida Local das Serras do Socorro e Archeira is an environmental education facility that supports the management of the protected landscape. It also promotes educational, scientific and cultural activities relating to its natural and cultural heritage. Its work therefore goes beyond environmental education to encompass the landscape’s cultural heritage as well.

Archaeological heritage on Serra do Socorro

The Povoado da Serra do Socorro and Capela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro are located on the summit of Serra do Socorro. Both offer excellent views over the surrounding region. The Povoado is an Iron Age fortified settlement with an oval layout measuring about 300 by 100 metres. Together with the chapel, it is classified as an IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest).

Annual festivities associated with Capela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro take place on 5 August and include a solemn Mass, a procession and a popular festival. If you’d like to plan your trip around these festivities, check the current event date in advance.

Churches and architectural history in Turcifal

Construction of Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria Madalena in Turcifal began in the 18th century; it took about a century to complete. The redesign that gave the church its current structure is attributed to JoĂŁo Antunes, the royal architect of D. Pedro II. Its construction period and architectural attribution provide two distinct historical points of reference.

Capela do Espírito Santo is also part of Turcifal’s older building stock. It is believed to have been founded in the late 15th or early 16th century. This tentative dating differs from the later construction period attributed to Igreja Matriz.
