Cadaval is surrounded by vineyards and orchards; agriculture remains its most important economic sector. The town’s annual festival, along with cultural offerings in town and activities in the nearby Serra de Montejunto, gives a stay a range of different focuses. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between regional festivities, local history and time outdoors. This way, Cadaval’s rural character combines with an annual festival whose dates vary.
Festival Days and Vinho Leve
The Festa das Adiafas e Festival Nacional do Vinho Leve takes place annually in the town of Cadaval and brings together gastronomy, exhibitions, performances and equestrian activities. The programme therefore extends beyond wine: culture and horse-related activities are just as much a part of it as the culinary offerings. Dates vary; if you are travelling for the festival, check the event dates for your planned stay.
The Vinho Leve focus has its own planning considerations. Each year, the festival includes tastings and sales of the Vinho Leve selections from several regional wineries; the participating wineries vary. If your main aim is to sample the wines, plan your trip around both the festival dates and the wineries taking part. For wine enthusiasts, the festival thus brings together two specific aspects: tasting and the opportunity to buy Vinho Leve selections from participating regional wineries.
Mills, Museum and Natural Ice
There are two distinct cultural points of interest in town: the Núcleo Museológico do Moinho das Castanholas is located in the town and is associated with a mill. The Cadaval Museum was established in 2002; in 2015 it moved to the town library building. The Real Fábrica do Gelo is also located in the surrounding area; this industrial complex was classified as a National Monument in 1997. It is a unique technological facility in Portugal for producing natural ice. The mill is the main focus at the Núcleo; the museum has its own institutional history, while the Real Fábrica represents industrial technology.
Routes and Activities in the Surrounding Area
The Estação da Biodiversidade de Montejunto is located near Cadaval. It is a 1.8-kilometre circular walking trail with eight panels about biodiversity. The eight panels give the circular route a clear focus on nature: it combines walking with information about biodiversity. Four hiking trails are marked in the Serra de Montejunto; check their availability before your trip. The nearby Serra de Montejunto offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, birdwatching, paragliding and hang gliding. If you have particular activities in mind, you can decide whether the themed circular trail, the marked hiking trails or one of the other sports mentioned better suits your travel interests.
