Santa Catarina appeals to travelers who want to consider architectural history, archaeological traces and nature when choosing a destination. The Pelourinho and the Capela do Coração de Jesus reveal different historical layers; the Castro de Santa Catarina adds archaeological finds. The Mata Nacional das Mestras brings in a protected natural area, with an annual date set for its municipal environmental project. This makes it possible to plan your stay around a specific focus: architecture, early finds or an event in the annual calendar.

The Pelourinho and its octagonal shape

The Pelourinho de Santa Catarina stands in the churchyard of the Igreja Paroquial Santa Catarina. It is materially connected to the charter granted by King Manuel I in 1518. In the second half of the 17th century or in the 18th century, the Pelourinho was almost completely remodeled; the exact date is unknown. The dating therefore belongs to the history of its remodeling and should not be read as a precise construction year. Architecturally, the octagonal platform and the crown in the shape of an octagonal cone stand out. Both forms repeat the octagon at different levels: below as the platform, above as the finial. Anyone interested in historic design will find here a clearly identifiable detail of form alongside the connection to the charter.

Construction date and features of the chapel

The Capela do Coração de Jesus reveals a different period: it dates from the 15th century, while its altar front is made of Mudéjar tiles from the 16th century. The construction and the fittings thus belong to two different centuries. This distinction is revealing when looking at the architecture: the history of a building can also be read in features added at a later date.

The Castro: location and history of the finds

The Castro de Santa Catarina lies in the Cabeço do Castelo area, on the municipality’s highest spur, overlooking two waterways. Its history can be explored through its finds as well as its landscape: prehistoric flint objects, along with amphorae and various everyday items from the beginning of the Roman presence, were found there. These details point to two distinct periods. If you are more interested in archaeology than architectural details, the Castro offers a different perspective from the architectural forms of the Pelourinho or the chapel: the focus is on the finds and the site’s location.

The Jardim de Santa Catarina is also a useful landmark in the town center: it is located in the center of the Vila de Santa Catarina.

Mata Nacional das Mestras and an event in the annual calendar

The Mata Nacional das Mestras is part of Portugal’s National Network of Protected Areas. As part of the municipal Bolotas Mestras project, public environmental education activities and acorn-collecting events are held in the Mata das Mestras every year on November 23. The project event sets a specific date in the annual calendar, while the historical themes are organized by century. If you are planning specifically for November 23, check the current program in advance.
