Pelmá combines a distinctive natural feature with several forms of local heritage. The Olho do Tordo karst spring forms a seasonal stream, along which watermills are located. The Igreja Matriz de Pelmá and the Moinho da Avanteira offer insights into architectural history and traditional knowledge; the Rota das Carmelitas crosses the entire parish. This lets you plan your stay around the landscape, local history or a view of the area as a whole.
Olho do Tordo: Spring, Cavern and Stream
The Olho do Tordo spring emerges from a very deep well. The karst spring is a cavern with a 150-metre tunnel, accessible via an artificial well. The spring’s source and the underground cavern offer two distinct aspects of this natural feature.
During the wetter seasons, a stream forms and only stops flowing at the beginning of summer. This seasonal change is a practical consideration when choosing when to travel: the stream is part of the landscape, but does not flow throughout the year. Watermills are located along the stream and are considered pre-industrial heritage. They connect the natural feature at Olho do Tordo with local heritage.
Church and Mill Heritage
The then-new Igreja Matriz de Pelmá was blessed and inaugurated on 21 October 1951. Today, the parish church of Pelmá and its access steps are symbols of the Freguesia de Pelmá. Its historic inauguration date and its present-day symbolic role thus stand side by side.
The Moinho da Avanteira showcases another aspect of the heritage. It is a sturdy, cylindrical stone mill with two storeys and represents intangible heritage encompassing knowledge of construction and milling techniques passed down through generations. This also includes associated legends, traditions and oral accounts. The church is defined by its inauguration date and symbolic status; the Moinho offers a perspective ranging from its architectural form to techniques and storytelling traditions.
A Route Through the Parish
The Rota das Carmelitas runs through the entire Freguesia de Pelmá, covering a broader area than individual buildings or the spring. If you want to take in the parish as a whole, you can make the route a focus of your plans.
Places and Dates to Help You Plan
The Freguesia de Pelmá has the Parque de Merendas do Lumiar, a picnic park, and the Parque Multiusos da Avante, a multi-purpose park. A municipal planning document from September 2021 lists both; facilities may change. If you plan to visit either site, check the current facilities before you go.
The Sagrado Coração de Maria festival is listed for the second weekend in August in the churchyard of the Igreja Matriz de Pelmá. Before planning a trip specifically for the festival, check whether it is taking place in your chosen year. A weekly Sunday market is listed in Avanteira, Freguesia de Pelmá; check in advance whether it will be held on the Sunday you plan to visit.
