In the center of Vide, the Ponte Medieval connects the two banks of the Ribeira de Alvoco. Vide extends across both banks of the Rio Alvoco, so waterways and structures together shape the town. Alongside the bridge, prehistoric rock art, a church and a museum space dedicated to olive oil production are among the cultural discoveries. If you want to explore the landscape on foot, the PR13 Rota da Ribeira de Alvoco also offers a challenging, time-consuming route.

Rock art and structures

Vide has three prehistoric rock art sites considered to be of great archaeological interest. Entre-Águas and Ferraduras are among the most important sites for rock engravings. They feature geometric-symbolic depictions as well as schematic anthropomorphic figures, probably dating from the Bronze Age. The motifs can be seen as two different forms of depiction: geometric signs appear alongside simplified human figures. The dating should also be treated with caution, since the engravings probably date from this period.

The Igreja Matriz is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção and probably dates from the 18th century. Its single-nave layout and main facade with blue-and-white patterned azulejos give it a different architectural profile from the arch of the Ponte Medieval. The bridge consists of a single, wide-span round arch made of regularly cut granite voussoirs. The church can thus be described by its floor plan and facade design, and the bridge by its arch shape and carefully worked granite masonry.

Olive oil and visiting arrangements

Lagar do Ribeiro has been a museum space since 2019. Visitors can learn about the traditional olive oil production process there. This subject complements the archaeological and architectural impressions with an insight into the production of a regional product. The olive press and museum are on Vide’s right bank, beside Rua do Passadiço.

The Centro Interpretativo de Arte Rupestre de Vide is located in the Vide primary school building. Visits are by prior appointment. If you plan to include this place in your itinerary, remember to arrange your appointment in advance.

River landscapes and surroundings

Poço dos Caneiros lies in a green landscape characterized by ash and alder trees. The natural pool is fed by clear water from the Ribeira de Alvoco; swimming is possible there in summer. Check local conditions before swimming. This makes the seasonal swimming opportunity a useful guide for planning, without suggesting that it is available year-round.

The Capela do Senhor do Calvário stands above Vide. It has a recreation area with majestic cork oaks. The chapel and cork oaks combine an architectural landmark with a described landscape feature. This makes for a different kind of visit from Poço dos Caneiros: there, swimming in the natural pool is the focus in summer; here, it is the recreation area by the chapel.

The PR13 Rota da Ribeira de Alvoco

The PR13 runs through a valley between the Serra da Estrela and the Serra do Açor and connects Vide with Alvoco da Serra. The route ends in Vide. It is 17.095 kilometers long, takes approximately six hours and 30 minutes, and is rated difficult. Allow a large part of the day for it. The route description, published in 2016, recommends the hike year-round. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Along the route are artificial pools known as “poços de broca.” Streams were diverted to create them. These pools are a different landscape feature along the PR13 from the natural pool at Poço dos Caneiros, where swimming is possible in summer. By choosing the route, visitors can distinguish between a long hike rated difficult and a described seasonal swimming spot.
