Corujeira combines rural culture with a mountain landscape in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. Its granite houses preserve the traditional architecture of Beira Alta; the village lies on the left bank of the Ribeira do Caldeirão. Livestock farming and sheep shearing are among the local customs passed down through generations. Nearby waterscapes add another dimension to your stay alongside these cultural points of interest.

Rural culture and heritage

The granite houses give the traditional architecture of Beira Alta a tangible presence in Corujeira. Agriculture and livestock farming are also important local activities. Two products also define the character of the village: Corujeira is known for its potato production and Serra cheese. Together with the houses, these details show how closely architectural heritage and rural work come together here.

Traditional livestock-farming and sheep-shearing customs are still preserved in Corujeira. Flocks tended by shepherds can be seen along the banks of the Ribeira do Caldeirão. The annual Jornadas da Lã also focus on livestock farming and sheep shearing. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.

Religious heritage includes the Igreja Matriz da Corujeira, also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Neves, and the Capela de São Barnabé. The Museu da Coruja has another local story to tell: it was established in a rural setting from the lifelong collection of an owl-art collector originally from Corujeira. Thus, religious sites and the origins of a distinctive collection sit alongside the themes of agriculture and architecture.

Waterscapes and nature destinations

Nearby, the Albufeira do Caldeirão is one of the municipality’s bathing areas, where various leisure activities take place. The reservoir and the Barragem do Caldeirão are located on the northeastern edge of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The waterside landscape features reeds, bulrushes and ash groves; further afield, there are gorse heaths and mixed forests of Pyrenean oaks, chestnuts and pines.

The nearby Praia Fluvial da Barragem do Caldeirão is a bathing area on the reservoir. Its facilities include a bar, toilets and showers; sport fishing is also possible. If swimming or fishing is important to your plans, check current operations and the rules for sport fishing in advance.

Another nearby nature destination is the Cascata do Caldeirão. Over a stretch of about 100 metres, gorges, waterfalls and pools follow one another; overall, the stream descends approximately 50 metres. A hiking trail to the Cascata begins near the medieval Ponte medieval da Mizarela. These approximate measurements describe the course of the stream, not the length or walking time of the trail.

The Camino de Santiago through Corujeira / Trinta

The 41-kilometre Caminho de Santiago passes through the Freguesia of Corujeira / Trinta along the Via Portugal Nascente. For orientation on the Caminho de Santiago through Guarda, there is separate information covering a wider area: along its entire route through Guarda, it is signposted with yellow arrows, posts, directional tiles and information boards at village entrances. The route length and the signage therefore refer to different geographic aspects of the Camino de Santiago.
