Quintã de Pêro Martins bears tangible traces of its architectural and artistic history. At the Igreja Matriz, an originally Romanesque appearance meets later extensions and wooden altarpiece panels; an engraved date on the Capela de São Sebastião adds another point of interest. A bridge over the Côa, an August festival and a route that passes through the village also offer different starting points for planning your trip.
Between the plateau and the Côa
The parish of Quintã de Pêro Martins lies at the western edge of a plateau, between the slopes of the Serra da Marofa and the steep banks of the Côa. The area around the steep banks of the Côa is scenically interesting. This places the plateau, mountain slopes and steep riverbanks within the same geographical setting. This view of the landscape complements the architectural history, offering another perspective on Quintã de Pêro Martins.
A church and an artwork with a history of their own
The Igreja Matriz’s original Romanesque appearance was altered by several extension works. Its architectural history therefore involves not only its original appearance, but also the changes made through these extensions. Behind the main altar, two wooden altarpiece panels stand beside the side doors. They belonged to a 16th-century triptych and are in poor condition. A triptych is a three-part work; the two panels therefore point to a larger artistic context. The Igreja Matriz thus offers two distinct points of interest: changes to the church building and the history of the panels as parts of an artwork.
A date on the Capela de São Sebastião
The date 1676 is engraved on the door jamb of the Capela de São Sebastião. It provides a different chronological reference from the triptych’s 16th-century dating: here, a year is recorded on a building component, while there, it is the artwork that is dated. The Lagar is also part of Quintã de Pêro Martins’s architectural heritage. These details add another element of local heritage to the picture of the church and chapel.
The bridge over the Côa
The bridge over the Côa connects Quintã de Pêro Martins with Cidadelhe in the neighbouring municipality of Pinhel. It was inaugurated on 8 July 1947. Alongside the religious buildings, a link between two places comes to the fore. The inauguration date gives this part of the village’s history a specific chronological reference; the bridge can also be viewed as an element of transport history.
An August festival and a route
The Festa da N. Sra. de Monserrate takes place in Quintã de Pêro Martins in August. If the celebration is important for your travel dates, check the specific event dates in advance. The Castelo Rodrigo | Red Route also passes through the village. This puts a seasonal event and a named route side by side as two different planning considerations. The festival gives your trip a seasonal focus, while the route provides a specific reference to its course.
