Praia da Rocha combines an approximately 3-kilometre-long sandy beach with rock formations carved by the sea. Portimão lies in the Arade estuary, so water and coastline shape not only the beach but also the history of the city and its surroundings.

Coast, Lagoon and Varied Landscapes

The P1 “A Rocha Delicada” circular trail runs through Quinta da Rocha, a peninsula bounded by the Ribeira de Odiáxere and the Alvor River. Along the way, farmland alternates with Mediterranean scrubland, marshland, former salt pans, fish farms and the Alvor lagoon ecosystem. The lagoon is home to numerous bird species, including flamingos; sightings may vary depending on the season.

Other trails offer their own distinctive landscapes. P3 “Varandas sobre o Mar” follows the edge of a rocky coastal cliff made of Miocene limestone. P4 “Viagem Interior”, by contrast, passes through a rural landscape of citrus groves, almond orchards and carob trees. Anyone interested in coastal landforms will find a geological point of interest on P3; P1 and P4 reveal different facets of waterside landscapes and agriculture.

P5 “Caminhos do Tempo” connects Portimão and Silves along the Arade. Salt pans, tide mills and canning factories once stood along its banks. The route thus draws attention to the river’s former uses and complements the natural and coastal landscapes with a history of industry.

History in a Museum, a House and an Archaeological Site

At the Museu de Portimão, the permanent exhibition “Portimão, Território e Identidade” tells the local story from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum is housed in a renovated former industrial building dating from the late 19th century. Here, the city’s long fishing tradition can be set in a broader historical context: it developed further, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the rise of the canning industry and tourism.

The Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes also connects the city’s history with a person: Manuel Teixeira Gomes was born in the 19th-century building that houses the Casa. He was a prominent politician and writer. The Casa can host recitals, presentations and workshops—making it a venue whose potential uses go beyond simply commemorating a life.

At Alcalar, the focus is on archaeological remains. The Monumentos Megalíticos de Alcalar are classified as a National Monument. The site also includes a settlement on a strategically located, defensible hill overlooking megalithic tombs. Here, the history of settlement, a prominent location and the visible tombs come together.

Getting Around and Staying Active by the Water

Praia da Rocha has facilities for basketball, football, volleyball and aerobics. As beach facilities may change, check locally before your trip to see what is currently available. The municipal bus service “Vai e Vem” connects different parts of Portimão with the beaches. Routes and timetables may change, so check the latest information before travelling.

For arrivals by sea, Portimão has a marina and a cruise port. AlgarExperience offers dolphin watching, brunch on board and parasailing from Portimão. The operator also runs trips from the main Algarve marinas in Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos. As offerings and operating arrangements may change, it is best to check the operator’s latest information before making plans.

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve complex includes a race track, a karting track and an off-road track. Individual facilities may change; if you are planning a visit, check what is currently on offer in advance. Grilled sardines, for which Portimão is particularly well known, are a local culinary highlight. Together with the fishing tradition, they tell another part of the story of the city’s connection with the water.
