The Sítio Arqueológico do Cerro do Castelo de Alferce offers a gateway to the landscape and settlement history. Nearby, an interpretation centre, a museum of sacred art and the Passadiço do Barranco do Demo each offer a distinct focus. The cultural themes and viewpoints can therefore be considered as separate highlights of your stay.
Elevation and settlement history at Cerro do Castelo
The archaeological site lies on the summit of a hill on the eastern edge of the Serra de Monchique. Its elevation is about 488 metres. From there, sweeping views extend over the Picota Massif and the Odelouca and Monchique rivers. These named viewpoints give the site a specific landscape setting: alongside its settlement history, its position on the hill is also part of the story.
The best-preserved Islamic settlement phase consisted of a fortified settlement with a military garrison and three walled areas. This description brings together structural fortification, military presence and the settlement’s layout. The timeframe is important for context: these features describe the best-preserved Islamic phase, not every period at the site in general. The location and the documented settlement form thus offer two different perspectives on the same archaeological site.
Archaeological history at CICCA
The Centro Interpretativo do Cerro do Castelo de Alferce, or CICCA for short, is a museum space dedicated to the archaeological and historical interpretation of Cerro do Castelo. Its permanent exhibition includes information panels, models, digital reconstructions and archaeological objects found during excavations. These different forms of presentation—from panels and models to reconstructions and artefacts—offer different ways into the archaeological subject. If you are planning a visit to the museum space, check the latest visitor information beforehand.
Church and sacred art
The Museu de Arte Sacra da Igreja de São Romão de Alferce is incorporated into the complex of the Igreja Paroquial de São Romão. It contains liturgical and devotional objects, including sacred images, old liturgical vestments, chalices and crosses. This brings a different collection into focus from the one at Cerro do Castelo: here the subject is objects used in sacred practice, while there it is an archaeologically described settlement phase.
The Igreja de São Romão de Alferce is believed to have medieval origins. It was rebuilt and adapted several times over the centuries. Its history therefore includes both its cautiously attributed origins and the changes made later.
A different focus at the Passadiço
The Passadiço do Barranco do Demo offers rest areas and natural viewpoints. Alongside the archaeological and museum themes, there is therefore a path with its own opportunities to pause and take in the landscape. If you are including the Passadiço in your plans, check its facilities and trail conditions before setting out.
