Barão de São João brings together hiking, art and culture as potential focal points for a trip: a named circular trail leads towards the Mata Nacional, a festival combines hiking with art, and the Pedra do Galo menhir adds a prehistoric dimension. Which of these themes takes centre stage during your stay can be decided by looking at specific trails and places.

Hiking among woodland, sea and art

The PR1 LGS – Pedra do Galo circular trail starts near the Centro Cultural de Barão de São João and heads north towards the Mata Nacional de Barão de São João. A separate “Pedra do Galo” hiking trail is 6.1 km long and is associated with the Mata de Barão de São João. The trails offer different reference points: for the PR1, these are its starting point near the cultural centre and its northbound direction; for the separate trail, it is the stated distance. If you are choosing based on length, the 6.1 km trail is a clear point of comparison; if you prefer a named starting point, you can locate the PR1 at the Centro Cultural.

One trail passes through rural countryside with views of the sea and the Ria de Alvor/Portimão, Lagos and Burgau. The same trail features numerous sculptures by local artist Deodato Santos. The landscape and outdoor art come together here: the views of the places mentioned and the sculptures offer different highlights along the trail.

The “Barão de São João – Walk & Art Fest” also combines hiking and art and takes place in Barão de São João. As a recurring event, it may be relevant to your travel dates. Check the dates for your preferred travel period before planning your trip around it.

Culture and planning your visit

Two different historic features offer a cultural introduction. In the Igreja de São João Baptista, an image of John the Baptist is displayed on the high altar, alongside four other altars. The Palaeolithic Pedra do Galo menhir is located in the Pedra Branca area. The contrast is clear: a religious image and several altars in a church on one hand, and a prehistoric monument in a named area on the other.

The Pólo Museológico is located in the Centro Cultural de Barão de São João and can be visited by prior appointment. Arrange your visit in advance. The PR1 circular trail starts near the same cultural centre, so you can distinguish between a museum visit that requires an appointment and a named starting point for your hike when planning.

A break and getting there

For an outdoor break, the Mata picnic area is another specific point of reference. It is near the Casa do Guarda and has wooden tables and benches as well as barbecue grills. Its location and facilities give you concrete points of reference when planning your time in the Mata.
