The Miradouro de Odeleite is located next to the N122 and offers views across the Odeleite Dam. From the air, the reservoir’s shape resembles a dragon; hence it is also called the “River of the Blue Dragon”. This gives you several aspects to consider when planning your trip: river landscapes and trails, as well as village history, culture and local events.

Dam, Ribeira and Trails

At the viewpoint, you can enjoy walks and relax, as well as have family picnics at tables and benches. This is a different way to spend time here than on the PR4 “Odeleite de Perto e de Longe”: the circular trail is 11 kilometres long and has a moderate level of difficulty. It follows part of the Ribeira de Odeleite and passes the site of the Moinho das Pernadas watermill.

The Moinho das Pernadas is located about two kilometres downstream from Odeleite, on the right bank of the Ribeira. The restored complex includes the mill, weir, quay, miller’s house, viewpoint and oven. The Grande Rota do Guadiana, or GR15, offers another route perspective: it passes through Odeleite and continues from there along the Ribeira towards Foz de Odeleite. For the PR4, the circular route, length and level of difficulty are specified; here, the GR15 is described in terms of its route through the village and downstream.

The landscape can also be understood through the river. The Ribeira de Odeleite rises in the Serra do CaldeirĂŁo and flows into the Rio Guadiana as a tributary. The dam was built on the Ribeira. Odeleite lies on the slope of the river of the same name, relatively close to the Guadiana; the village is shaped like an amphitheatre and has predominantly rural features. The Mata Nacional das Terras da Ordem is located in the northeast of the municipality of Castro Marim, in the parish of Odeleite. Its diverse flora and fauna provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species.

Village History and Culture

The Casa de Odeleite is a house museum that preserves the memory of the people of the village and its surroundings. It has also been converted into a cultural centre, where local ways of life are recreated and past uses and traditions are commemorated. The collection comprises around 3,000 objects, including furniture, documents, agricultural tools and decorative items. These themes add a cultural dimension to a visit to Odeleite, complementing its river landscapes and walking trails.

Another glimpse into the village’s history can be found at the Igreja Matriz de Odeleite, also known as Nossa Senhora da Visitação. The church dates from the 16th century and is designed in the Baroque style. Its described interior features include gilded woodcarvings, several paintings and a collection of antique goldsmiths’ work.

Market and December Event

The Mercadinho da Aldeia takes place on the first Sunday of every month at the Casa de Odeleite. Stalls offer regional handicrafts, sweets and homemade preserves, Algarve goat’s cheese, and garden produce. Weaving and bread-making workshops, as well as themed walks, are also usually part of the programme. Check the date again before planning your trip to make sure the market falls during your stay.

The Presépio Vivo takes place in Odeleite on the second weekend of December. It features more than 50 costumed participants, as well as craftspeople and local producers. If you would like to plan your trip around this annual event, check the programme for the relevant year.
