In Albufeira, historic sites meet a coastline shaped by wind and sea, with various ways to explore the city. A circular route passes a city landmark; museums and craft activities offer further perspectives on local history and culture. When planning, it is therefore worth considering your own interests: will your stay focus mainly on the Old Town, the coast or a particular experience?

Old Town history at specific sites

The Museu Municipal de Arqueologia is located in the Old Town. Its significant archaeological collection documents human settlement in the area from prehistoric times to the modern era. The Misericórdia complex is also in the historic centre. It is one of the oldest parts of the centre and lies within the old fortified town. Its buildings include a hospital, a chapel and a former hostel. The Capela da Misericórdia was previously an Arab mosque and a chapel for the castle governors; in 1499, it was restored as a Misericórdia chapel.

The churches, too, represent different chapters in the city’s history. Albufeira’s main church was rebuilt in the late 18th century after the 1755 earthquake. The Church of São Sebastião houses the Museum of Sacred Art, with religious and artistic works of significant heritage value. The Church of Sant’Ana is in the historic quarter and overlooks the city and the coast. The Pintor Samora Barros Gallery is located in the former power station in the historic centre.

Circular route and coastal scenery

The Percurso do Centro Antigo is an easy 7.1-kilometre circular walking route with three variations. It starts and ends at the Posto Municipal de Turismo de Albufeira and passes the Torre do Relógio, which the city council describes as an Albufeira landmark. Another route, the Via Algarviana, connects Albufeira and Alte in the municipality of Loulé over a distance of 29.3 kilometres. The details make clear that these are two distinct options, rather than a single combined tour.

Along the coast between Praia da Oura and Praia do Peneco, the landscape is shaped by rock formations sculpted by the sea. Praia do Túnel ou Peneco can be reached through a tunnel in the centre of Albufeira. At the western end of Praia do Peneco, a seafront promenade runs along the water and ends at Gruta do Xorino. Thus, alongside the route through the historic centre, there are specific waterside places to explore.

There are also different experiences to enjoy from the sea: dolphin-watching trips regularly depart from the Algarve coast and are among the visitor experiences available in Albufeira. On coastal cave tours in Albufeira, visitors explore rock formations shaped by the sea in small boats. When choosing between these options, you can consider the kind of experience you want: a route through the city, a waterside promenade or a tour in a small boat.

Crafts and local traditions

The Centro de Artes e Ofícios de Albufeira has an exhibition space open to the public and offers short creative workshops. Participants can learn basic techniques in a craft discipline. The Empreita workshop in the 2026–2027 programme offers an introduction to weaving palm leaves and making small items. Dates and availability may change; check the current programme if you plan to make the workshop a fixed part of your itinerary.

The Festas do Pescador celebrates the customs of the fishing community with a re-enactment of fishing boats arriving at the beach, food offerings, traditional games and music. The 2026 edition’s programme included these elements; individual components may vary. The festival is traditionally held on the first weekend of September, though the dates may differ each year. Dishes on offer that reflect the local connection to the sea include Xerém with clams and Choquinhos com tinta; menus may also vary.
