Figueira da Foz lies at the mouth of the Mondego and has a beach with an especially wide expanse of sand. The river mouth, coastline and maritime themes offer clear starting points for planning a trip. There are also historic buildings, collections and cultural venues. If you are deciding what to focus on during your stay, you can choose from these different aspects of the destination.
The Mondego, the beach and maritime themes
The expansive sandy beach is a distinctive feature of the townscape. The maritime side is also reflected in the Porto de Recreio da Figueira da Foz, which has 200 berths for boats measuring 6 to 15 metres in length. Its facilities also include workshops for repairing boat hulls and engines. These details offer an insight into the harbour’s infrastructure without implying that a specific berth or service is available to individual travellers.
Sailing and powerboating championship events are held in Figueira da Foz. If these events matter to your trip, check the specific dates. Another way to explore the region is the EuroVelo 1: Figueira da Foz is its access point in the Coimbra region.
Buildings and traces of history
Forte de Santa Catarina was built in the late 16th century to defend the mouth of the Mondego. Its triangular structure comprises three curtain walls, a half-bastion and two irregular bastions. Pelourinho da Figueira da Foz offers a different architectural accent: the column, made of Lioz limestone and erected in 1782, has a Solomonic design and is classified as a National Monument.
Casa do Paço was built between 1690 and 1704 by D. João de Melo, Count-Bishop of Coimbra, and formed part of the Figueira da Foz entail. Particularly unusual is the tile ensemble in four rooms on the upper floor: it comprises around 6,700 Dutch Delft tiles, each with an individual image. The approximate number of tiles and their distribution across several rooms make this collection a distinctive feature of the destination’s architectural and cultural history.
The former Santo António Monastery, also known as the Igreja da Ordem Terceira de S. Francisco, was founded in 1527. The church houses carved altarpieces from Mosteiro de Seiça and Mannerist paintings in the upper choir. These sites bring together different historical themes: the defence of the river mouth, the design of a monument and the furnishings of a religious building.
Collections, cultural venues and everyday life
The Museu Municipal Santos Rocha has permanent collections of religious and contemporary art, numismatics, Indo-Portuguese furniture, ethnography, weapons and archaeology. The Centro de Artes e Espectáculos brings together four exhibition halls, an art school, a large and a small auditorium, rehearsal rooms, an inner courtyard and an open-air amphitheatre. The EdifĂcio da Assembleia Figueirense continues its cultural and social activities and is considered a landmark of Figueira da Foz’s recent history.
The Quartel da Imagem houses the Municipal Photographic Archive and has exhibition halls. As facilities may change, check current visiting arrangements before you go. At Mercado Municipal Engenheiro Silva, you will find stalls selling fresh fish, regional products, fruit, vegetables and flowers. Since 2004, the market has been classified as a property of public interest. Here, a glimpse of what the market offers meets the building’s cultural and historical significance.
More perspectives nearby
Nearby, Cabo Mondego is a limestone outcrop at the western end of the Serra da Boa Viagem, between the beaches of Murtinheira and Figueira da Foz. As a nearby location with its own landscape character, it complements the coastal and cultural themes. In nearby Buarcos, the NĂşcleo MuseolĂłgico do Mar explores fishing, cod fishing, and maritime life, art and faith. Guided visits are available by prior arrangement.
Parque Aventura offers another change of pace, with six high ropes courses at heights of 3 to 12 metres. As operating details may change, it is advisable to check them before making specific plans. Overall, there are several themes to choose from: maritime activities and a cycling route, historic buildings and collections, or nearby nature and museums.
