Tocha combines a long fishing tradition with an extensive coastal area, dunes and a range of cultural sites. At Praia da Tocha, traditional Arte-Xávega fishing is still alive; the Mata and Teixoeira lagoons are also part of the area’s tourist-relevant landscape. This gives visitors two clear focal points for a stay: fishing history and culture on the one hand, and coastal and dune scenery on the other.

Arte-Xávega and its history

The Centro de Interpretação de Arte-Xávega (CIAX) explores the historical, sociocultural and ethnographic dimensions of traditional fishing at Praia da Tocha. Texts, films, photographs and exhibits document the fishing, as well as the boats and nets used. These tools are therefore not presented in isolation, but as part of a broader account of this tradition.

The centre can be viewed alongside the current picture of fishing: Arte-Xávega is still practised at Praia da Tocha and is one of its main tourist attractions. According to the municipal visitor information, updated in 2021, admission to CIAX is free and an appointment must be made in advance. Confirm your visit date beforehand.

Church history and museum

The Igreja Paroquial da Tocha traces its origins to a small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Atocha in Madrid. The original hermitage was founded in 1610 by D. Juan Garcia Bacelar. Inside, the nave is lined with ten blue-and-white azulejo panels dating from around 1763. The early history of the religious site thus sits alongside a specific, later-dated feature of its interior.

The Núcleo Museológico do Hospital Colónia Rovisco Pais showcases the cultural and scientific heritage of the former Hospital Colónia Rovisco Pais. Objects, photographs and documents tell the story of Portugal’s last leper colony. While CIAX focuses on fishing and its sociocultural dimension, this museum turns its attention to another chapter of Portugal’s past. Visits are guided and must be arranged in advance. The municipal visitor information was updated in 2023; confirm your appointment before visiting.

Coastal area, lagoons and dunes

Tocha’s tourist-relevant landscape includes an extensive coastal area and the Mata and Teixoeira lagoons. If you would like to add a specific landscape experience to your cultural history itinerary, the Rota das Areias Douradas is a short circular route through the dune area of Praia da Tocha. It is about 5.9 kilometres long. This is an approximate distance; no walking time or specific difficulty level is given.

The route and the lagoons are distinct landscape features: the Rota das Areias Douradas is described as a circular route, while the Mata and Teixoeira lagoons form part of Tocha’s wider tourist-relevant landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on a specific route or the wider landscape, without treating the two as one combined trail.

Visitor information and dates

The Marchas Populares are also part of the local events calendar: they take place on an evening close to 23 June at Praia da Tocha in honour of S. João. If you plan to travel during this period, check the exact event date in advance.

Praia da Tocha carries the Bandeira das Acessibilidades, recognising good access for visitors with reduced mobility. Check the current beach facilities before your visit. Together, the different cultural and landscape features provide a clear basis for choosing where to stay: the key question is whether you want to focus on fishing history, other aspects of cultural history, or the coastal and dune scenery.
