Aldeia de Joanes brings together tangible architectural and local history with cycling opportunities. Igreja de São Pedro already existed in 1223; a route of the Centro de BTT da Serra da Gardunha starts and ends in the village. This gives you two distinct interests to consider when planning your trip: historic architectural styles and a cycling route with a local start and finish point. You can focus on one or see whether both fit your plans.

Church, Chapel and Wells

Igreja de São Pedro is also known as Igreja matriz de Aldeia de Joanes and Igreja Paroquial da Aldeia de Joanes. It is classified as an IIP – Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). It may have been founded in the 13th century; the building already existed in 1223. Architecturally, the church has a longitudinal layout with a nave and a chancel. The term longitudinal layout describes the orientation of the building; nave and chancel refer to its main spatial elements. For travellers interested in architecture, this offers both an early historical context and a specific opportunity to consider the structure of a religious building.

Another religious building is Capela de Nossa Senhora do Amparo. Nossa Senhora do Amparo is the patron saint of Aldeia de Joanes. The chapel’s restoration was inaugurated on 6 August 2023. Its name, patron saint and restoration date offer different perspectives on local history: religious identity on the one hand, and an event from 2023 on the other.

Aldeia de Joanes has two medieval dipping wells. One stands in a square next to Capela de Nossa Senhora do Amparo and has a square roof with a rounded arch. The combination of a square roof and a rounded arch adds a clearly identifiable architectural form to the description of the wells. Alongside the religious buildings, historic water structures are another aspect of the village’s history.

Houses, Landscape and Cycling

The houses are also part of the village’s history. Aldeia de Joanes preserves a group of 16th-century houses, some of which bear coats of arms. This broadens the focus from churches and the chapel to residential buildings and heraldic symbols. In chronological comparison, the medieval wells, 16th-century houses and the chapel restoration inaugurated in 2023 represent different historical reference points. The southern boundaries of Aldeia de Joanes include the Serra da Gardunha.

The Centro de BTT da Serra da Gardunha comprises eight routes, four difficulty levels and a total of 250 km. One of these routes starts and ends in Aldeia de Joanes. For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish this local start and finish point from the centre as a whole: the four difficulty levels and total distance apply to the route network. If you choose an individual route, check its specific difficulty.

Plan your trip around the interest that matters most to you.
