In Torre de Moncorvo, discoveries range from sacred art and Jewish history to photography, archaeology and iron mining. If you would like to balance cultural interests with the landscape, you’ll also find trails, viewpoints and birdwatching hides. These different themes can help you plan a trip around your own interests.
Architecture and Regional History
The Igreja Matriz de Torre de Moncorvo, also known as Nossa Senhora da Assunção, holds the title of a minor basilica. Construction began in 1544, and it has been classified as a National Monument since June 16, 1910. The Museu de Arte Sacra explores another sacred theme: it is housed in a building next to the Igreja da Misericórdia. The exhibition “Arte e Fé em Torre de Moncorvo” features liturgical objects, images of saints and liturgical vestments. The display may change over time.
The Museu do Ferro & da Região de Moncorvo is dedicated to the region’s archaeological and industrial heritage, particularly activities related to iron mining. The Centro de Estudos Judaicos Maria da Assunção Carqueja e Adriano Vasco Rodrigues serves as an interpretive and educational center for Jewish history and culture. Its program regularly includes temporary events, such as meetings, book presentations, open days and concerts. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these events, check the dates before you travel.
Photography, Archaeology and Everyday Stories
Photographic records at the NĂşcleo MuseolĂłgico da Fotografia do Douro Superior date back to 1894; the collection comprises around 100,000 photographs. It also includes cameras and early projection and film equipment. Here, you can encounter both images and devices from the history of photography and film.
The Museu do Castelo displays archaeological materials recovered during excavations, as well as technical documentation produced by archaeological teams. At the Casa da Roda, an interactive screen presents the notes left with the children and the building’s history. The Casa da Roda also displays 138 objects donated by families from the MunicĂpio de Torre de Moncorvo. Together, the collections offer different insights: into archaeological finds and their documentation, photography and photographic equipment, and the history of a building and the objects preserved there.
Trails and Views Around Torre de Moncorvo
Two routes have different described courses to help you find your way around: the GR 36 hiking trail passes through the town. Around Torre de Moncorvo, the 34-kilometer Ecopista do Sabor follows a former railway line between the north bank of the Douro at Pocinho and Carviçais. The Ecopista offers views of the Douro, Torre de Moncorvo, the Sabor Valley and the Serra do Reboredo. From the summit of the Serra do Reboredo, there is also a sweeping view of Torre de Moncorvo, the Vilariça Valley, and the Sabor and Douro rivers.
Two wooden birdwatching hides stand on the Serra do Reboredo. They blend into the natural surroundings and are intended to disturb the animals living there as little as possible; from the hides, you can observe animals’ movements and behavior. To visit the birdwatching hides, contact the Loja Interativa de Turismo to arrange the visiting details.
Events and a Protected Regional Product
The recurring Festival do SolstĂcio offers three days of activities, workshops, astronomy sessions, concerts, performances and reenactments of summer solstice celebrations. In April, the Feira Medieval transports Torre de Moncorvo back to the medieval era. It features a medieval market, workshops in traditional crafts, taverns and historically inspired food. Dates and programs for both events may vary, so check the latest information if you would like to plan your trip around them.
A local product is another of the area’s distinctive features: since March 2018, Amêndoa Coberta de Moncorvo has held the protected geographical indication IGP. It is made in three varieties: Tradicional, Peladinha and Morena.
