To get your bearings in Carvalhais, it is worth looking at two different measures of the Ecopista do Tua: one between the stated endpoints and one for the section within the municipality of Mirandela. The Igreja de São João Baptista offers a different perspective, focusing on late Baroque architecture and the layout of the floor plan.
Ecopista do Tua: Route and Railway Connection
A 55.619 km section of the Ecopista do Tua is in operation between the former Carvalhais railway station and Quadrassal. The Mirandela section starts at Estação de Carvalhais; within the municipality of Mirandela, it covers a total of 13.656 km. These figures refer to different geographical areas: the first describes the route between the endpoints, while the second gives the extent within the municipal area. Keeping the two figures distinct helps you understand both the overall operational route and the Mirandela section.
The Ecopista do Tua uses a disused section of the Linha do Tua that was suitable for conversion into an ecopista. The former railway line is therefore part of the route’s infrastructure history and explains its connection to the Linha do Tua. A downloadable route file is available and can be used with a GPS application. You can use the file as a digital guide alongside the route measurements when including the route in your travel plans.
Igreja de São João Baptista
The Igreja de São João Baptista is an example of late Baroque religious architecture. Its floor plan is longitudinal, comprising a nave and a narrower chancel of the same height. Put simply, the two parts differ in width, not height. This makes the spatial layout easier to understand: the nave and chancel have different widths but remain the same height. Two specific features help characterize the church: its late Baroque style and the layout of its floor plan.
A Park in the Municipality of Mirandela
The Parque da Ribeira de Carvalhais is also located in the municipality of Mirandela. This landscaped park near the river has space for family walks and games, as well as a children’s playground. The park offers a different focus from the route and the church: family walks, games and the playground take center stage.
