Picote brings together a striking Douro landscape and cultural history spanning different eras. A circular trail runs from Picote to Remanso and back to Picote; rock carvings, archaeological remains, frescoes and evidence of traditional trades offer other kinds of discovery. You can therefore plan your stay around a particular hike or historical themes, without combining these different highlights into a single route.

Circular Trail and Douro Landscape

The Picote–Remanso–Picote circular trail is 8.2 kilometres long and takes about three hours. Along the way, there are views of the Douro, Barrocal and the Picote Dam. The distance and approximate duration give you a concrete basis for planning your hike; trail conditions can change, so it is worth checking them before setting out.

The gorges are also a focus for hiking in their own right, separate from this circular route: hiking trails run along the Douro gorges near Picote. From the Miradouro da Fraga do Puio viewpoint, you can see a narrow bend in the Douro, set between almost vertical rock walls. The circular trail and its approximate duration, and the paths along the gorges, are different points of reference when considering how much hiking to include in your trip.

Cultural History from the Iron Age to the Modern Era

The urban ensemble of Barrocal do Douro is considered Portugal’s only example of the concept of a “Modern City, Industrial City.” Together with the Picote hydroelectric facilities, the architectural ensemble of Barrocal do Douro was classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público in 2009. Here, a distinctive urban planning approach meets the history of hydropower. Picote’s well-preserved granite houses and medieval religious buildings add further architectural and historical aspects to this picture.

The Castro da Cigaduenha represents an older historical period: this fortified Iron Age settlement covers about ten hectares and is located in Picote. The Porca de Picote also points to archaeological finds. The headless boar figure was discovered in 1952; later excavations at the site uncovered the structure of a complex sanctuary. There is also a rock carving at Fraga do Puio depicting a hunter with a bow. These sites and depictions offer a different way of exploring history than the modern ensemble of Barrocal do Douro.

Religious art also spans different periods: the Capela de Santo Cristo in Picote has frescoes dating from the first half of the 16th century. The Eremitério Os Santos contains 18th-century hagiographic frescoes. For planning your trip, this contrast in dates provides a helpful thread: the places and works represent different periods of regional cultural history, without implying a specific sightseeing route.

Tradition, Landscape and Birdwatching

Past ways of life and livelihoods are also part of Picote’s history. Until the mid-20th century, there were about ten watermills along the Ribeira, which flows into the Douro. Wine presses were also among the traditional trades at that time. The Terra Mater – Ecomuseu da Terra de Miranda in Picote is organised around the four basic elements of water, earth, fire and air, and connects them with the region’s traditional practices. Mills, trades and the ecomuseum’s concept each offer a different perspective, drawing attention to the relationship between the landscape and traditional practices.

Picote is located in the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. The Picote Dam is listed as a birdwatching site; which species can be seen and what seasonal conditions are like may vary. Those who want to focus mainly on the landscape and nature will find a different highlight here than at the archaeological sites or frescoes. This means you can choose Picote for your stay according to your interests in Douro views, hiking trails and cultural history.
