Podence can be explored through a specific tradition: Entrudo Chocalheiro and the Caretos. There is also a permanent exhibition, a documentary film, graffiti dedicated to the Caretos and a church dating from the late 17th century. The themes range from living traditions and local history to a circular trail and regional dishes.

A living tradition

During the Entrudo Chocalheiro processions, masked Caretos roam the village of Podence. Their main task is to tease women with their cowbells. Children also take part in the ritual: as “facanitos”, they play at being Caretos apprentices. The Entrudo Chocalheiro of Podence is recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Casa do Careto and other Careto motifs

The permanent exhibition at Casa do Careto displays costumes, cowbells, masks and other Careto clothing. The cowbells link the exhibits to the ritual, while the costumes and masks show other aspects of their appearance. A visit to the Museu do Careto also includes a screening of a documentary film about the tradition. The exhibits are thus complemented by a cinematic portrayal and the practice of the custom during its processions, offering different ways to explore it. Visitors can see several graffiti works dedicated to the Caretos in Podence. The Casa do Careto shop also offers the opportunity to take part in a “Ser Careto” experience.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação is also among Podence’s cultural attractions. It was built in the final years of the 17th century and is classified as a Monument of Public Interest. Its exact founding date is unknown, and it is also unclear whether the church replaced an older building. It is therefore a different point of reference in local history from the Entrudo Chocalheiro: the focus here is on the period of construction and unanswered questions about what came before.

Trilho dos Caretos: from the village to Praia da Ribeira

For a hike, the Trilho dos Caretos de Podence is a specific option. The short route starts at an information board in the village of Podence, near Casa do Careto, and ends at Praia da Ribeira, one of the two river beaches at the Azibo Reservoir. A circular version of the Trilho dos Caretos de Podence is approximately 8.5 km long and is graded as easy. The distance and difficulty rating apply to this version; do not automatically apply them to the short route. Trail conditions may change. Check them before setting out.

Transmontane cuisine

The regional tavern “O Careto” is located in Casa do Careto and serves Transmontane dishes, including posta, rodeão and various cured meats. This adds a specific dining option to the cultural and trail-related attractions. Service information may change; check what is currently being served before visiting.
