Archaeology and Architectural History
The Ponte de Castrelos is an archaeological heritage site dating from the modern or contemporary period. Remains of the bridge approaches survive from the old bridge, which has since been destroyed. The old road to which the bridge belonged still shows traces of carts. A footpath leads to the Ponte; check current path conditions before visiting.
Cabeço de São João is a fortified archaeological settlement associated with the Iron Age, Roman period and Middle Ages. Various authors also suggest that remains of Iron Age settlements may be present on the S. João hill, also known as S. Julião, and at Alto de Castrelos. Cabeço is associated with several periods; the hills, by contrast, are thought to contain the remains of Iron Age settlements.
Another historical interpretation concerns the early medieval “Villa” of Castrelos. It is sometimes identified with the villa that Múnio Gonçalves is said to have partially donated to the monastery of Lorvão, according to a document from 988.
The Igreja de São João Baptista is the parish church of Castrelos; its proportions are considered graceful. The Capela de São Bernardino is one of Castrelos’s notable examples of religious architecture.
Landscape and Watermills
The terrain in the parish of Castrelos is mountainous and rugged, with an average elevation of over 750 metres. The Baceiro River crosses the northwestern side of the parish area. Trout are also among the parish’s fish resources.
Several simple, picturesque watermills have been preserved in the parish area and are intended to be protected and restored. One specific example is Moinho do Caniço, a restored watermill. Its traditional buildings have retained their authenticity.
