Brunhais lies on the southern slope of Monte do Castro and on the right bank of the Rio Ave. Documents mention the village from 1059 onwards; in 1978, a necropolis dating from the period of Roman rule was discovered at Lugar da Igreja. Churches, chapels and houses offer further historical points of interest. Brunhais can thus be understood through its landscape and cultural heritage, while its connections to the bridge and the Way of St James provide a broader geographical context.

Landscape and Getting There

The southern slope of Monte do Castro and the right bank of the Rio Ave are the two specific landscape features associated with Brunhais. To get there, access via the municipal road E.M. n.Âş 599 is relevant. Include this road connection in your route planning and choose your route according to your starting point.

History and Architecture

The mention in documents from 1059 onwards and the discovery of the necropolis in 1978 represent different historical references: one a documentary mention, the other an archaeological find. The necropolis, dating from the period of Roman rule, was discovered at Lugar da Igreja. To place Brunhais in its historical context, you can distinguish between these written and archaeological traces without equating them with the later buildings.

The Igreja Matriz de Brunhais dates from 1890. The local parish church is called Igreja Paroquial de Brunhais (SĂŁo Paio). JoĂŁo AntĂłnio de Matos is credited with rebuilding the church of Brunhais. The Capela de S. Pedro is an example of rural architecture; it was restored and donated to the Freguesia by the family of Casa das Leiras.

There are also various details to note about the houses. Casa dos Vieiras e Britos is an example of 17th-century rural architecture, while Casa da Portela is another example of rural architecture in Brunhais. Casa da Torre bears the coat of arms of the Vieiras and Tinocos. Taken together, these details do not make up a single, unified building history, but instead offer different points of reference: a date, an architectural classification, a coat of arms, and the restoration and donation history of a chapel.

Ponte de Mem Guterres and the Way of St James

In the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, Ponte de Mem Guterres, also known as Ponte da Esperança, shapes the landscape with its single large arch. It was built at a narrow, rocky point on the upper course of the Rio Ave. The arch and its location on the river are the bridge’s defining features.

The Caminho Português de Santiago de Leon de Rosmithal crosses Ponte Mem Guterres in the area of the União de Freguesias de Esperança e Brunhais. A notice dated 24 March 2026 lists scallop shells, yellow arrows and information boards as route markers. As the signage may change, check the current waymarking before setting out.

This distinction helps you separate Brunhais’s own location and history from the broader route information.
