Explore Calvos via hiking trails, the Carvalho de Calvos pedunculate oak and traces of earlier settlement. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the named routes by the features actually specified: one route lists walking time and difficulty, while another focuses on its connection to the Maria da Fonte Interpretive Centre.

Hiking trails and their routes

The GR 117 – Via Romana XVII is a linear route covering 15 kilometres. The stated walking time is four hours, and its difficulty level is 3 out of 5. This provides a time estimate and a rating for planning the hike, as well as the distance. Near Botica, in the parish of Calvos, the route includes a considerable, well-preserved section of paved road.

The PR1 – Maria da Fonte Short Route is 12 kilometres long and crosses the Union of Parishes of Calvos and Frades. It starts and ends at the Maria da Fonte Interpretive Centre. In terms of distance, it is shorter than the 15-kilometre GR 117; the walking time and difficulty rating given for the GR apply to its own description.

The “Maria da Fonte” Walking Trail follows the same route as the Via Romana XVII. The GR 117 also crosses the Ribeiro do Pontido on its way towards the Carvalho de Calvos Interpretation Centre. The routes can therefore be distinguished by their names and described routes without conflating their distance information.

Another named hike is the Trilho dos Moinhos do Pontido, which passes nine ruined watermills along the Ribeiro do Pontido. This route offers a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside the paved road section of the GR 117. When choosing a trail, you can therefore consider both the stated distances and the different landmarks described.

Carvalho de Calvos and nature

Carvalho de Calvos is a pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) that has been classified as a tree of public interest since 22 August 1997. It is also known as Carvalha grossa and Carvalha da Fondoua. According to an estimate, it is the oldest oak on the Iberian Peninsula and the second-oldest in Europe. Its age is an estimate. Another distinctive feature is the habitat it provides for stag beetles, thanks to its large amount of deadwood. Numerous specimens can be seen there during the summer months.

The Carvalho de Calvos Interpretation Centre is located in Calvos and was established to provide information about the tree and the ecosystems around it. The centre offers environmental education and awareness activities for children, young people, adults and older people. It complements nature observation with a thematic introduction to the oak and its ecosystems.

Historical and archaeological traces

The trails also invite visitors to explore the history of the area. The preserved paved road section near Botica is part of the described GR 117 – Via Romana XVII route. Along the Ribeiro do Pontido, meanwhile, the focus is on the nine ruined watermills of the Trilho dos Moinhos do Pontido. These two features point to different aspects of the local cultural landscape.

Archaeological finds add to this picture. A polished stone axe from the Mamoa da Tojeira in Calvos dates to the Neolithic, more specifically from the end of the 4th to the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC. The Mamoa do Madorro is a circular structure thought to be a Neolithic burial mound. It was identified near Carvalho de Calvos in 2006 and is dated to around the 4th millennium BC.

For a visit focused on nature, the pedunculate oak, the chance to spot stag beetles in summer and the interpretation centre are the main attractions. Those interested in trails and heritage, meanwhile, can explore the specific differences between the linear GR 117, the 12-kilometre PR1 and the described mill ruins. These highlights can help you plan the timing and themes of your trip according to your interests.
