River estuary and coast
Vila Nova de Milfontes lies at the mouth of the Mira, where fresh water meets the Atlantic. Beaches, dunes and cliffs shape the landscape in between. This meeting of river and coast is a distinctive starting point for planning your trip. You can plan your stay around the area’s different landscape features rather than focusing on just one beach; at the same time, its historical roots reach back to the town’s founding.
Beaches, water and hiking
Praia da Franquia offers calm waters that are suitable for children. Windsurfing and canoeing are also possible there, and small boats are available to rent. This offer may vary by season, so it is worth checking whether rentals are available during your visit. This means a coastal stay can include a range of water activities as well as calm waters, without requiring a particular itinerary.
At Praia do Farol, pools form at low tide. Because it is close to the river mouth, take particular care around possible currents. Pay attention to the warnings and notices posted on site. Alongside the calm waters at Praia da Franquia, this makes for a practical difference when planning your beach visits: at Farol, the tides and local notices deserve particular attention.
If you prefer to explore on foot, one section of the Fishermen's Trail runs from Vila Nova de Milfontes to Almograve. It is 16.6 kilometres long and is considered short and accessible. This distance gives you a concrete basis for planning your hike; trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
A boat trip on the Mira is recommended as an activity for visitors. If you would like to experience the river from the water, you can consider including this option in your plans. Operators and schedules may change, so check which trips are available and their times during your visit.
Local history and religious heritage
Vila Nova de Milfontes was founded in 1486 by royal decree of King João II. Forte de São Clemente was built later, between 1599 and 1602, to protect the town and shipping. The two dates mark distinct chapters in the town’s history: its founding in the late 15th century and the construction of the fort in the early 17th century.
The history of the port is also tied to the region. For several centuries, the river and seaport of Vila Nova de Milfontes served as an outport for Odemira. Another dated reference belongs to aviation history: on 7 April 1924, pilots set off eastwards from Campo dos Coitos near Milfontes.
Ermida de São Sebastião is a popular Mannerist chapel that is now integrated into the town. It dates from the mid-16th century and probably stands over an older military structure. Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça dates from the early 16th century. Its façade and chancel arch were relatively little affected by the modernisation of 1959. These buildings reflect different historical periods rather than belonging to a single era.
A river procession takes place on 15 August, setting off from Igreja Matriz. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check it in advance. This lets you take the procession into account as a specific event when planning your travel dates.
