São Marcos da Ataboeira combines cultural history with a landscape shaped by pseudo-steppe. The Capela de Nossa Senhora de Aracelis offers a specific reference point for getting your bearings. It is near Monte do Salto, at an elevated location and about eight kilometres from São Marcos da Ataboeira. The chapel lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Castro Verde and Mértola. Its distance places the chapel in relation to São Marcos, while the municipal boundary also connects it with Castro Verde and Mértola.
Landscape and birdlife
The entire parish of São Marcos da Ataboeira lies in a Special Protection Area for steppe birds and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Pseudo-steppe is the dominant landscape in the parish. Steppe birds found in São Marcos da Ataboeira include the great bustard and little bustard. For travellers who want to factor nature into their choice of destination, this steppe landscape is a distinct focus alongside the area’s cultural history.
Historic sites and crafts
The buildings and archaeological sites lead through different periods of history. Cerro da Mina is an Iron Age necropolis in São Marcos da Ataboeira. The Ermida de São Pedro do Soeiro was built at the end of the 14th century by a wealthy landowning family in the parish. The Igreja Matriz de São Marcos da Atabueira is a modern-era church. These sites span the periods from an Iron Age necropolis through a chapel dating to the end of the 14th century to a modern-era church, giving the cultural theme a clear chronological structure. The Lagar de Cera de São Marcos da Atabueira is classified as Grade 3 cultural heritage. The Moinho do Salto in São Marcos da Ataboeira is also classified as Grade 3 cultural heritage. Local history also includes a once-important wax mill associated with beekeeping and the production of beeswax.
Traditions with set dates
The Aleluia tradition always takes place on the Saturday before Easter. Its procession, accompanied by the ringing of bells, passes through Figueirinha, Guerreiro and Salto before reaching São Marcos da Ataboeira, where houses are blessed. The traditional Festas de São Marcos take place on 25 April. For planning purposes, these dates are clearly distinct: the Aleluia procession is tied to the Easter calendar, while the Festas take place on a fixed date.
