Santo Espírito combines museum history and religious architecture with views of the landscape around Maia Bay. In the centre of the parish is the Santo Espírito museum unit of the Santa Maria Museum. Its collection, historic architecture and views offer different perspectives on the area.

Museum and Local Tradition

The history of the Santa Maria Museum goes back to a collecting initiative started by José Maria Amaral. Amaral was the parish priest of Santo Espírito; the collection took shape in the late 1960s and early part of the following decade. The museum’s background therefore reaches back to a period of community collecting.

The museum is housed in a former rural residence dating from the 20th century. The collection includes furniture and traditional household objects from the island, as well as an area devoted to everyday life. Bringing these objects together with the everyday-life display draws attention both to the material objects and to their connection with daily life.

A local tradition recounts that the first Mass of the Holy Spirit on Santa Maria was celebrated in Santo Espírito. The story is considered mythologised and possibly distorted, and should therefore be understood as a local account rather than an established historical event.

Architecture and Craftsmanship

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação was built in the 16th century and extended in the 18th century. Its construction history therefore spans two widely separated periods. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres faces the sea and is surrounded by vineyards. Its altar has an antependium clad in blue and white azulejos, with yellow accents.

The Moinho da Lapa is also part of Santo Espírito’s cultural heritage: it is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (IIP), or Property of Public Interest. The Cooperativa de Artesanato de Santa Maria offers another perspective on local craftsmanship. Visitors can watch weaving and buy handmade items there; the cooperative is certified with the Artesanato dos Açores quality label.

Views and Walking Routes

From the Miradouro da Vigia da Baleia, you can take in the landscape of Maia Bay. The viewpoint is located at a former whale-watching station. Information panels there explain Santa Maria’s whaling history, adding historical context to the view over the bay.

The Santo Espírito–Maia walking route is marked as closed. Its described route starts at the church in Santo Espírito, passes the Santa Maria Museum and heads east towards the sea. The route passes through a forest of Incenso trees (Pittosporum undulatum). Do not plan it as a route that is currently open to walkers, and check its status before setting out.

The Santa Maria Grand Route reaches the area around the parish of Santo Espírito after passing the ruins of a windmill. Within the parish, it follows an unpaved passageway from Rua do Museu to Caminho do Pico.
