São João lies between two mistérios, or fields of solidified volcanic lava. The landscape, structures dating back several centuries, and local agriculture give the place its varied character. Its maritime past is also part of the story: São João’s seaport served as a departure point for whaling. The focus of a stay here is therefore on culture and nature, without implying a set daily itinerary.
Volcanic Landscape and Time Outdoors
Parque Florestal Mistério de São João lies on the south coast of Pico, at an altitude of about 100 metres. It covers around four hectares of the Mistério de São João. The park’s recreational facilities are used for walks, picnics, and celebrations. Paths lead to noteworthy structures made of volcanic stone and to the Centro de Divulgação Florestal, which is dedicated to volcanism.
Facilities for physical activity include fitness equipment, exercise circuits, and traditional games that encourage sport and exercise in harmony with nature. If you plan to use a particular facility during your visit, check the current conditions in advance.
Another option for spending time outdoors is Zona Balnear do Verdoso (Poceirão), a natural swimming pool with changing rooms in São João. If you plan to visit the bathing area or use specific facilities, check the current conditions before your visit.
Buildings and Local History
Igreja de São João Baptista is a three-nave church dating from the 19th century. In 2008, it was completely restored, including its pipe organ. Império de São João, a 20th-century building, also stands on Rua da Igreja. Nearby is a copeira bearing the inscriptions “IRMANDADE/ DO/ ESPIRITO/ SANTO” and “1877/1954”.
Poço de Maré, an 18th-century tidal well with a square protective wall, is located on Caminho do Verdoso. The Casas Rurais on Canada do Almance also date from the 18th century. This group comprises rural homes and outbuildings that served agricultural purposes. They may be the oldest houses in the parish of São João.
Another example of local architectural history is the 20th-century rotating windmill on the Canada do Alferes Pereira road. Its entire mechanism is still intact inside. The church, historic homes, tidal well, and windmill differ both in age and in form. Those interested in architecture and local history will find several distinct points of interest here, rather than just one historical theme.
Dairy Farming and Local Cheese
São João is an important centre of dairy farming. The well-known Queijo de S. João cheese comes from here. It adds a connection to local agriculture to the themes of landscape and architectural history, and gives the place’s identity a culinary dimension.
