On the north coast of Faial Island, Praia Do Norte offers various ways to explore the landscape and local history: a viewpoint above the fajã, dark beach sand, and paths with volcanic and cultural points of interest. The views, coastline and history each offer a different focus for planning your trip.

Fajã, beach and volcanic formations

Fajã da Praia do Norte has a mixed origin, formed from detrital material and lava. Detrital material refers to deposited rock material; together with the lava, it shapes the geological character of the fajã. Another specific point of interest is the small harbour in the fajã area: it is cut into a lava flow containing olivine xenoliths. Xenoliths are rock fragments carried within another rock. The Rocha da Fajã path also passes a geological site: the Arriba Fóssil da Praia do Norte geosite lies along the route. The landscape along Rua das Adegas is also protected.

For views over the fajã, Miradouro da Costa Brava offers a distinct perspective: this viewpoint in Praia do Norte looks out over it from a height of 320 metres. At Praia do Norte beach, the sand is dark and appears green on closer inspection. The beach is also known locally for surfing. The viewpoint, the unusual sand colour and surfing thus offer different ways to experience the landscape and sport of Praia do Norte.

Rocha da Fajã: circular route and points of interest

The Rocha da Fajã PRC2FAI is a circular route. It starts and ends at the regional road; its start and end point is 300 metres from the Baía da Ribeira das Cabras viewpoint. The route runs within the protected area “Área Protegida para a Gestão de Habitats ou Espécies dos Capelinhos, Costa Noroeste e Varadouro” and passes a protected area for endemic plants. There is also a picnic area along the route.

One of the stops along the route is the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, built in 1787. The route thus combines natural and geological points of interest with a specific historic building. Another route outline is titled “Praia do Norte, Capelinhos and Capelo”: it begins with a visit to the municipality of Praia do Norte on Faial’s north coast, following a circular walking route of around 2.5 kilometres. History and festival traditions

The history of the village was also shaped by a volcanic eruption. On 24 April 1672, a lava flow from the eruption at Cabeço do Fogo destroyed the parish of Praia do Norte as it then existed and covered its farmland. The population was dispersed, the parish was dissolved and later incorporated into Capelo. These events give the name Capelo a specific connection to the former parish in local history, without reducing the changes of that time to a single building.

A procession is part of the Feast of the Holy Spirit in Praia do Norte. During the festivities, Rosquilhas or Vésperas are still given to passers-by. The tradition of the Império dos Irmãos do Divino Espírito Santo da Praia do Norte also centres on sharing as a community: it includes Sopas do Espírito Santo. These customs reflect different aspects of the festivities—the procession as part of the celebration and the food as a shared tradition.

Crafts and wine in the old village of Fajã

Praia do Norte’s craft traditions include work with willow rods and corn husks, as well as lace and embroidery. The different materials and techniques show that this tradition encompasses more than a single craft. Wine cellars where wine is still produced can be found in the old village of Fajã. Together with the festival customs and the communal sharing of Sopas, the crafts offer insight into the village’s cultural and culinary traditions, alongside its volcanic landscapes and paths.
