Borkowo brings together two different periods in one destination: the manor house park laid out in the 19th century and megalithic remains in the surrounding area. In the park, buildings, a grassy area, trees and ponds form a whole; at the burial ground and dolmen, the focus is on prehistoric times. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can assess Borkowo in terms of its cultural and landscape features.

The manor house park and its spatial layout

The manor house park was laid out in the 19th century. A large grassy area surrounded by old trees lies south of the building there. In one corner of the grassy area are two ponds connected by a ditch. Their locations create a clear spatial arrangement: the open area lies south of the building, the ponds are in one of its corners, and the ditch connects them. This makes it possible to distinguish the meadow and the water area as separate elements of the same park.

The tree population comprises around 300 deciduous and coniferous trees. Alongside the approximate number, the composition of the tree population adds another aspect to the spatial layout. The details about the areas and water features explain where key elements are located; the information about the trees, by contrast, describes the park’s tree population as a whole. You can therefore understand the park from two perspectives: through the arrangement of its features and through the type and approximate number of trees. These perspectives complement each other without one replacing the other.

Megalithic heritage and its historical context

The megalithic burial ground lies about half a kilometre from Borkowo and contains graves from the Funnel Beaker culture that are around 5,000 years old. The Borkowo dolmen dates to approximately 3000 BC. The dates refer to different things: for the burial ground, they indicate the approximate age of the graves and their cultural affiliation; for the dolmen, they indicate when it was built. The distance of about half a kilometre places the burial ground in the vicinity of Borkowo. This allows each of the two megalithic sites to be considered in light of its own dates.

In contrast to the 19th-century manor house park, the graves and dolmen reach far back into prehistory. Borkowo thus offers two distinct historical perspectives: a park with identifiable spatial features and megalithic remains understood through their age, cultural affiliation and dating. This comparison helps place the destination in context; it does not make the park, burial ground and dolmen into a single site.

Borkowo when looking for accommodation

This distinction is useful when choosing a place to stay. First consider whether you would prefer to connect your stay with the park or with megalithic heritage: Borkowo brings together both themes, but they appeal to different interests. If you are interested in park history, you can focus on when the park was laid out and its spatial arrangement. If you are interested in archaeology, the graves from the Funnel Beaker culture and the dolmen are the main points of interest.
