Karsko brings together several periods of architecture, a manor park and places to visit around the water and cycling. The town is home to the stone Church of St Anthony, a former hunting lodge that is now a ruin, and a Baroque manor house. Lake Karskie Wielkie is one kilometre away; beaches and bathing areas are located on both shores. A blue cycling route also passes through Karsko. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: cultural history, parkland, swimming and cycling.
Church and historic buildings
The Church of St Anthony was built in the second half of the 13th century by Cistercians from Kołbacz. Its stone structure is Gothic. In the second half of the 19th century, the church was remodelled from the Gothic to the Neo-Gothic style; in 1899, this changed the overall appearance of the church. Two building phases can therefore be distinguished: its medieval foundation and its extensive 19th-century remodelling. For those interested in architecture, a particular point of interest is the transition from Gothic to Neo-Gothic style.
Another historical thread leads to the early modern period. In 1624, Adam von Schwartzenberg had a hunting lodge with defensive features built in Karsko. The former hunting lodge is now a ruin. The Baroque manor house was built in 1755 by order of an owner. The hunting lodge and manor house therefore offer different historical and architectural points of interest: the former is defined by its hunting function and defensive features, while the latter is Baroque. Together with the church, Karsko’s historic buildings span the period from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
Manor park and landscape
The three-hectare manor park contains around 40 species of trees and shrubs. Three trees there are designated as natural monuments: the “Chochoł” oak, the “Brzęczadło” lime tree and the horse chestnut. The “Chochoł” oak is around 200 years old. The park can therefore be appreciated both for the variety of its woody plants and for its individual trees designated as natural monuments. Visitors interested in old trees will also find a particularly striking example in the oak, whose approximate age is known.
Karsko’s location is also part of its landscape appeal: the town lies in the buffer zone of Gorzowski Landscape Park. The manor park and this location offer two different ways of placing Karsko in context, between its specific parkland and its wider landscape setting.
Lake shore and cycling route
Lake Karskie Wielkie is one kilometre from Karsko. There are beaches and bathing areas on both the north and south shores; the northern beach also has a footbridge and a campsite. If you are planning a swim, knowing the difference can help you choose a shore: bathing areas are available on both sides, while the footbridge and campsite are at the northern beach. Check the current access conditions at the lake before your visit.
A blue cycling route passes through Karsko and is about 19 km long. Its approximate length gives you a concrete point of reference when planning a cycling trip. The route adds cycling as a distinct activity alongside the historic buildings and park.
