Lapidarium and churches
The Polickie Lapidarium is located in Staromiejski Park, in the southern part of Police’s old town. It sits on a small rise on the grounds of a former cemetery and preserves and displays fragments of gravestones from former German cemeteries that once stood in what is now the Police municipality. The site thus combines its park setting with a history that extends beyond the location of the former cemetery itself.
The lapidarium was established in 1998 on the initiative of local authorities and historian Jan Matura. The collection includes around 125 gravestone elements, including steles with well-preserved inscriptions and stylized tree trunks. The two forms create different focal points: the preserved lettering stands out on the steles, while the tree trunks draw attention to their sculpted form. The collection therefore ranges from inscribed gravestones to elements with a sculptural appearance.
The Gothic chapel stands at Plac Bolesława Chrobrego, in the center of the market square. It is the only surviving remnant of the 13th-century Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Najświętszej Marii Panny), which was demolished toward the end of the 19th century. The chapel thus recalls both the medieval church building and its later demolition.
The 19th-century Neo-Gothic Church of St. Mary (Kościół Mariacki) provides a different architectural accent. Its tower is over 60 meters high and is visible from afar in Police’s skyline. Together, the two buildings represent different historical periods: the chapel as a remnant of a 13th-century church and St. Mary’s as a 19th-century Neo-Gothic church.
The Łarpia and routes
Right beside the old town, on the Łarpia, a riverside area has been developed with moorings for kayaks and facilities for fishing and relaxation. It offers a water-based contrast to the cultural sights: kayaking, fishing and relaxation give this area a different focus. There is also a marina on the Łarpia in the old town, used by sailing associations and sailing clubs. The riverside area brings together kayak moorings, fishing and relaxation; the marina, by contrast, is primarily used by sailing associations and clubs.
Routes also vary in length. The yellow hiking trail “Szlak Policki” starts at the market square in Police and runs via Trzeszczyn, Stare Leśno and the Szczecin–Tanowo road to Bartoszewo; it is 11.6 km long. In the municipality, the circular “Dookoła gminy Police” route starts and ends in Police and is about 48 km long. The “Nad brzegi śródleśnych jezior” circular route also starts and ends in Police and covers about 58 km.
The three routes differ in both length and endpoints: “Szlak Policki” runs from the market square to Bartoszewo, while both longer circular routes end back in Police. The approximate lengths of the two circular routes differ by around 10 km. Check current route conditions before setting out.
