The Brama Wysoka in Gryfice houses a museum and a tourist information office, both inside a historic city gate. The town also has remains of medieval fortifications and a narrow-gauge railway with a route between Gryfice and Pogorzelica.

City route and fortification remains

The urban tourist route “Dwóch Bram” is 2.5 km long and runs through Gryfice’s old town and its outskirts. The remains of the fortifications offer a distinct perspective on the city’s history and architectural forms.

The surviving remains of the medieval city walls, Brama Wysoka, Brama Kamienna and Baszta Prochowa are examples of fortifications typical of a medium-sized Pomeranian town. Their names refer to different elements of this architectural ensemble: two gates and a tower beside the wall remains.

Brama Wysoka is on the old town route. It houses the Muzeum i Galeria Brama and a tourist information office. The gate thus combines its role within the historic fortifications with a present-day cultural and tourist function. Visitors can find both a museum and an information office in the same building.

Following the renovation of its roof and the construction of a balcony at the top, Baszta Prochowa serves as a viewing tower. This gives the tower a different present-day function from the two gates. Together, the surviving gates, tower and wall remains give a concrete impression of the different forms of the fortifications.

Narrow-gauge railway: route and history

The Nadmorska Kolej WÄ…skotorowa connects Gryfice and Pogorzelica along a complete 39.5 km route. Seasonal operating times may vary, so check the timetable in advance if you are planning a journey. Unlike the urban tourist route, the railway focuses on a much longer connection between the two endpoints.

One historic section of the route dates back to an earlier period in railway history: the first line of the Gryficka Kolej Dojazdowa, the Greifenberger Kleinbahn AG, ran from Gryfice WÄ…skotorowe via Karnice to Niechorze. It opened on 1 July 1896.
