The Guzianka I and II lock complex connects the town of Ruciane-Nida and Lake Jezioro Nidzkie by water to the rest of the navigable route section.
Waterways and passenger cruises
Passenger cruises on the Great Masurian Lakes also travel, among other places, to Ruciane-Nida and to the towns of Mikołajki, Giżycko and Węgorzewo, which lie along the routes. This distinguishes two ways of navigating the waterways: the lock complex provides a connection to the rest of the navigable route section, while passenger cruises serve several destinations. If you are planning a passenger cruise, check the specific schedule in advance.
Military history and the Wyłuszczarnia Nasion
The Ruciane Guzianka defensive complex was built in 1900 along the shores of Lakes Jezioro Bełdany, Jezioro Guzianka Mała, Jezioro Guzianka Wielka and Jezioro Nidzkie. All surviving structures of this defensive infrastructure are now within the town of Ruciane-Nida. The museum in the machine-gun tower displays surviving original equipment; it also presents the history of the defensive complex. Check the current opening hours before planning a museum visit.
A second historical focus is the Wyłuszczarnia Nasion: it was built between 1890 and 1892 and was the largest facility of its kind in East Prussia. The construction dates put the two subjects in chronological order: the Wyłuszczarnia predates the defensive complex built in 1900. One represents a single historic facility, while the other is a defensive system along several shores, whose surviving structures are now within the town.
Nature trails with different themes
One nature trail runs through a woodland area between ul. Mazurska and ul. Guzianka and Lakes Guzianka Wielka and Guzianka Mała. It leads to two infantry strongpoints, Infantry Structures No. 3 and 4, an artillery position, and the machine-gun tower at the Guzianka I lock. Unlike the museum, which presents the history of the defensive complex, the trail makes specific military sites part of the route.
A nature trail starts by the “Dębami Królewskimi,” opposite the Wyłuszczarnia Nasion in Ruciane-Nida, with two circular routes of 2.5 km and 4 km. The 1.5 km difference in length helps you compare the two options by distance. The nature trail at Lake Jezioro Chudek starts on the grounds of the Wyłuszczarnia Nasion and runs around the overgrown Lake Chudek. Its starting point distinguishes it from the loop by the Dębami Królewskimi: there, the route starts opposite the facility; here, it starts on its grounds. The starting point and connection to the lake are therefore specific features to compare.
The trails offer different points of reference to help you choose: the route to the military sites is defined by its destinations, the loop by the Dębami Królewskimi by its two route lengths, and the nature trail at Lake Jezioro Chudek by the lake and its starting point. This lets you choose based on theme or stated distance.
