Kajkowo brings together two distinct travel interests: the history of St. Monica’s Parish and Church, and the 22-kilometre Mała pętla ostródzka, which passes through the village. There is also the Lourdes Chapel, with its own history, and a memorial on Plac Mariacki. South of Kajkowo, the “Napoleon” Hill offers views of Ostróda and the surrounding area. When planning, you can weigh these interests separately: church history and memorial sites offer a different focus from a circular route or the landscape views.
St. Monica’s: parish, construction and consecration
The Roman Catholic Parish of St. Monica was established in Kajkowo on 1 July 2000. Construction of the church began in 2001. Since Easter 2004, Kajkowo’s Catholic community has gathered there. On 26 September 2010, Archbishop Wojciech Ziemba, Metropolitan of Warmia, consecrated the altar and the church. These dates mark different milestones: the establishment of the parish, the start of church construction, the community’s gatherings there since Easter 2004, and the later consecration. If you want to place Kajkowo’s local history in chronological context, it is therefore worth treating the establishment of the parish and the consecration as separate events.
The Lourdes Chapel and the memorial on Plac Mariacki
The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes (Matki Bożej z Lourdes) was built in 1946 and commemorates the town’s rescue from wartime destruction. In 2006, Bishop Julian Wojtkowski renovated and consecrated the chapel, and a commemorative plaque was embedded in its wall. The construction date and later renovation thus mark different periods in its history.
Behind the chapel, on Plac Mariacki, a boulder-shaped monument was erected on 11 November 2010. Its inscription commemorates the 100th anniversary of the restoration of Polish independence. The date refers to the monument’s erection; the inscription records the occasion being commemorated. Together, the chapel and boulder represent two distinct forms of remembrance: the rescue from wartime destruction and the commemoration of Polish independence.
Mała pętla ostródzka: a circular route with two starting points
The Mała pętla ostródzka is 22 kilometres long and runs via Ostróda, Lichtajny, Brzydowo, Ornowo and Kajkowo, before returning to Ostróda. Kajkowo is not merely a village along the route: you can also start your tour here. Ostróda is likewise described as a convenient starting point. If you are including the loop in your plans, you can choose between these two suggested starting points. The listed place names also show the exact route sequence. Check current route conditions before setting out.
“Napoleon” Hill and views of Ostróda
“Napoleon” Hill lies south of Kajkowo. From there, you can look out over Ostróda and the surrounding area. This landscape view complements the village’s historical themes, though it addresses a different interest: St. Monica’s, the chapel and the monument focus on dates and remembrance, while the hill offers a view. If you plan your stay around your interests, you can consider these highlights separately rather than treating them as a single sightseeing itinerary.
