Szabruk offers two distinct cultural points of interest: the Church of St. Nicholas and St. John the Evangelist, and the Dramiński Museum of Agricultural Machinery. There is also a red cycling route through Sząbruk and a hilly lake landscape nearby. You can tailor your stay to architectural history, the history of technology or a section of the cycling route, while also making the surrounding landscape a focus in its own right.

Church in Sząbruk: Building History and Visiting

The Church of St. Nicholas and St. John the Evangelist in Sząbruk was built towards the end of the 15th century from fieldstone and brick. From 1911 to 1913, a new three-aisled church building was added based on a design by Fritz Heitmann of Königsberg. This means that two building phases, separated by several centuries, can be distinguished: the church building at the end of the 15th century and the extension in the early 20th century. Fieldstone refers to a natural building material; “three-aisled” describes the division of the extension into three church aisles. A visit to the Church of St. Nicholas should be arranged by phone in advance, so please call ahead to arrange your visit.

The History of Agricultural Machinery at the Dramiński Museum

The private Dramiński Museum of Agricultural Machinery in Sząbruk is devoted to historical agricultural technology. The Foundation for the Protection of the Technical Agricultural Heritage of Warmia and Masuria established a collection of agricultural machinery through the museum, to preserve it from destruction for future generations. The museum has more than 200 historic machines. The collection includes 277 horse-powered treadmills and is associated with an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 2019. The figure for the treadmills gives the technical theme a clearly defined focus.

Cycling Route and Lake Landscape

The red cycling route in Gietrzwałd municipality passes through Gronity, Naterki, Sząbruk and Unieszewo. Within the municipality, the route is well signposted in both directions. Individual sections can be ridden from Olsztyn, Stare Jabłonki or Unieszewo. When planning, you can start at one of these points and choose a section of the route. When choosing your activities, the distinction is clear: the church and museum represent two cultural themes, while the cycling route offers an active way to explore by bike.

Szabruk is located near Lakes Wulpińskie and Świętajno. The surrounding area is considered a hilly, glacial landscape with lakes, small bodies of water and clusters of trees in the fields. This brings a different focus to the fore than the church and museum: not individual buildings or machines, but the landscape near the destination. According to the accommodation description, a sandy beach with a swimming area and a playground for young children is 200 m from an accommodation address in Szabruk. If you would like to include these facilities in your plans, check before visiting whether the swimming area and playground are currently open for use.
