Rybno is a village in the Gmina Sorkwity in Mrągowski County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland. Rybno was already a parish in the 15th century. This local history offers a specific focus when choosing a holiday apartment; activities at Lake Piłakno can be considered separately as part of your trip planning. Tourism, agritourism and lakeside leisure activities are developing in Rybno and other places in the Gmina Sorkwity.
Churches and traces of local history
A granite baptismal font has survived from the church of the Teutonic Order period. At Kościelna 47 stands the Roman Catholic parish church of Saint Boniface, bishop and martyr. It dates from 1928 and is part of Rybno’s protected architectural heritage. In addition to the Roman Catholic parish church, the village’s buildings include Protestant churches and a palace.
Other protected heritage sites represent different periods and uses. The Protestant family cemetery in Rybno dates from the early 19th century and is listed as a historic monument. A stone agricultural building from the third quarter of the 19th century is also protected as a historic monument. Together with the parish church dating from 1928 and the surviving granite baptismal font, these sites span the period from the Teutonic Order era to the 20th century. Rybno’s historic buildings also contribute to a cohesive picture of traditional Masurian settlement; religious and agricultural buildings represent different aspects of the village’s history. The stone farm building is older than the parish church dating from 1928.
Lake Piłakno: water, forest and early history
Scuba diving takes place at Lake Piłakno, including organized diving courses. Availability may change, so check in advance when making specific plans. The lake is also used for fishing. Access and permits may vary by season and provider. A hiking route runs through the forest along the eastern shore. Check trail conditions locally. The activities differ in type: diving and fishing take place at the lake, while the hiking route follows the wooded shore.
On the western side of Lake Piłakno, an archaeological site about 3 km from Rybno preserves the remains of a lake settlement from the Early Iron Age. This site extends the historical perspective beyond Rybno’s church and architectural history. When planning your visit, it is a distinct historical point of interest alongside the buildings in the village.
