The 1.3-kilometre promenade is Mikolajki’s main tourist thoroughfare. It is lined with restaurants, taverns, cafés and shops, as well as water sports equipment rentals, sailing harbours and a passenger ship port. The town harbour extends along almost the entire length of the promenade, which was modernised in 2022. The lakeshore is therefore a clear point of reference, while cultural sites and signposted routes offer different points of interest.

Routes to sights and the water

The 4.7-kilometre “Zwiedzamy Mikołajki” route leads to the town’s main sights. The 4.9-kilometre “Wzdłuż jeziora Mikołajskiego” route passes through Mikołajki and the surrounding forest, crosses a footbridge to the lake’s western shore and follows the water, with views of the town. The difference in length is just 0.2 kilometres: the first route takes you to the sights, while the second connects the forest, bridge and lakeshore. So your choice depends more on the route you want to take than on a major difference in distance.

Signposted cycling tours are another way to plan your stay: these are circular routes that each start and end in Mikolajki. If you would rather go fishing, there are opportunities on lakes and canals in the surrounding area. A suitable licence is required. You can choose between a general licence covering numerous lakes and canals, or a licence for a specific special lake.

Cultural history and architecture

The Muzeum Reformacji Polskiej is dedicated to the Reformation movement in Poland and Masuria, as well as to the history of Mikołajki. Its collection includes numerous old prints, photographs and other documents. The Kościół Ewangelicko-Augsburski Świętej Trójcy, a Protestant church, offers a different historical connection: it is Neoclassical and was built in 1842 to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Documentary evidence and a specific building thus provide different ways to explore the town’s history.

Excursion days, events and water

Full-day passenger trips run from Mikołajki to Giżycko, Ryn or Ruciane-Nida. Schedules and operators vary by season. If you plan to include one of these trips in your itinerary, check the timetable for your intended travel dates in advance. On a regional scale, Mikolajki is also on the “Szlak białych żagli” route through the Great Masurian Lakes. The route passes through Węgorzewo, Giżycko, Ryn and Mikołajki, among other places.

The “Festiwal Szantowy” has been held in Mikolajki for more than 40 years. Around the turn of July and August, shanty music fills the shore of Jezioro Mikołajskiego; the exact event dates vary. During Dni Mikołajek, the “Król Sielaw” is launched into the water each year. The ceremony reenacts part of the legend associated with Mikołajki. If you plan to travel for an event, be sure to factor the exact dates into your plans.

For summer recreation, Baseny Letnie w Mikołajkach is one option: this water and leisure complex has spacious outdoor pools and a varied water playground for young children. The municipal bathing beach has showers and lifeguard supervision; some facilities are seasonal. Before your visit, check which seasonal offerings are available during your planned dates.

Mikolajki offers a range of ideas for a day out: a route to the sights, a longer trail taking in forest and lakeshore sections, a cycling loop or a full-day passenger boat trip. Cultural history, events and seasonal water activities add to the options, though there is no need to fit them all into one trip.
