Stare Juchy combines marked hiking and cycling trails with tangible evidence of Masurian architectural and local history. For planning, it is worth looking at the routes: alongside a circular hiking trail, there are trails to named places, a circular cycling route, and another cycling route to Kałtki. The church, reconstructed cottage, natural monument, and railway station area each offer a distinct focus.
Hiking: Destination or Circular Route
The green-marked hiking trail runs 4.5 km from Stare Juchy to Kałtki. The red-marked trail is 7 km long and follows a circular route: it passes Lake Garbas and returns to Stare Juchy. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in destination and course. When comparing them, consider whether you want to hike to Kałtki or choose a circular route.
Cycling Routes with Different Courses
The route makes a difference when cycling, too. The green-marked route is an approximately 19.6 km circular loop via Zawady Ełckie and Gorłówko, returning to Stare Juchy. The blue-marked trail runs via Szczecinowo and Gawliki Małe to Kałtki and is approximately 31 km long. The first route explicitly mentions returning to the starting point, while the second leads to Kałtki. So compare not only the approximate distances but also where each route leads.
Church and Masurian Architectural Styles
The church in Stare Juchy dates from the 16th century and has been remodeled several times. Inside are an altar from 1501 and a pulpit from 1574, as well as a Gothic triptych from 1591. Several dated works are thus set within a building history shaped by alterations. If you are interested in sacred art and historic architecture, the church offers a distinct cultural and historical focus.
A reconstructed Masurian cottage in Stare Juchy has wooden three-post porches. Its historical model is dated to the first half of the 19th century, probably to 1809. The present building was reconstructed in the 1980s; the original model came from nearby Kałtki. These details distinguish the older model from the later reconstruction and give you two points of reference in time for this building.
Erratic Boulder, Canal, and Railway Station
A gray granite erratic boulder protected as a natural monument is 4.5 m long, 2.25 m wide, and has a circumference of 10.61 m. It is one of the largest erratic boulders in Masuria. According to legend, it was once an altar used for sacrifices by the Old Prussians. Its measurements describe its physical size; the story of the sacrificial altar, by contrast, is explicitly a legend.
At the edge of the village, the Młyńska Struga canal connects Lakes Rekąty and Jędzelewo. The railway station also offers a link to local history: a historic Polish OL-49-class steam locomotive built in 1952 stands there. When approaching from the direction of Ełk, the OL49-29 steam locomotive is about 200 m before the station building, on the left side of the tracks.
