Gorlo lies on the shore of Lake Ułówki, which is connected to Lake Łaśmiady and forms its western arm. This gives the village a direct connection to Lake Ułówki; at the same time, the two lakes are geographically linked. For maps and directions, it is worth keeping the names distinct: Lake Ułówki is the lake on Gorlo’s shore, while Lake Łaśmiady is the lake of which Ułówki forms the western arm.

Lake Ułówki and the lake complex

Lake Ułówki near Gorło has an area of 264.82 hectares and a maximum depth of 25.5 metres. The depth figure is the maximum, not the average depth. This should be distinguished from the lake complex comprising Ułówki, Łaśmiady and Rekąty, for which a total area of around 1,400 hectares is given. This makes it possible to consider the size of the individual lake separately from the area of the entire complex.

The connection between the waters is also part of finding your way around the area. Ułówki is connected to Łaśmiady; it is not simply a similarly named lake nearby. If you are considering Gorlo as a place to stay, you can therefore take into account both its immediate lakeside location on Ułówki and its connection to Łaśmiady.

Two different routes

The orange-marked “Wokół Łaśmiad” circular route is about 31.7 kilometres long. It passes through Stare Juchy, Gorło, Zawady Ełckie, Sajzy, Piaski, Malinówka, Bałamutowo, Łaśmiady, Jeziorowskie and Liski. The circular route thus connects Gorło with a number of other places; its approximate total length also gives a concrete sense of the distance involved.

The green cycling route follows a different course: it runs from Stare Juchy via Zawady Ełckie and Gorłówko, then back to Stare Juchy, reaching Gorło at kilometre 4.1 of the route. Along the way, the route repeatedly offers views of Lake Ułówki and its surroundings. Unlike the “Wokół Łaśmiad” circular route, Stare Juchy is listed here as both the starting and ending point, with Gorło along the way. These details help distinguish the multi-village circular route from the cycling route by their courses.

A nearby lake

Another point of interest is the nearby forest lake Ślepieniec. It lies north of the road between Stare Juchy and Gorło and is considered worth seeing. This is a separate option in the area, in addition to Ułówki on the village shore. If you would like to include Ślepieniec in your plans, check access in advance.

Accommodation and activities

A municipal accommodation listing dated 5 June 2023 describes AlleGorło as an agritourism establishment in the village of Gorło, by the lake complex of Ułówki, Łaśmiady and Rekąty. It lists water sports, cycling, horse riding, tennis, golf and walking among the activities available to guests.

Carp, crucian carp, bream, zander, catfish, pike and eels can be caught in Lake Ułówki. Fishing is therefore another possible focus, in addition to the activities listed for AlleGorło guests. If you are planning to fish, check the applicable conditions in advance.
