Działdowo combines Teutonic Order history, notable churches and opportunities to explore the surrounding area by bike. The castle and churches offer different historical highlights; four marked cycling routes complement the cultural program with outdoor activity. You can choose the focus of your stay based on your interest in the city’s history or cycling tours.

Teutonic Order Castle and city history

In 1306, the Teutonic Order built the first defensive structure in the area of Działdowo. The Muzeum Pogranicza is located in the Gothic wing of the Teutonic Order Castle at 12 Zamkowa Street. The exhibition “Działdowo – miasto i ludzie dawnego pogranicza” was on view at the castle from September 2018. If you are planning a museum visit, check the latest visitor information before your trip.

In April 2026, a guided city tour with a museum guide began. A speaker and a museum employee supplemented the walk with stories about important places and sights. Without a code, only one of 15 possible routes was available. Check the latest information about access and the app in advance.

Churches and different construction periods

St. Adalbert’s Church was built in 1862 in the Neo-Gothic style. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is considered the oldest church in the city; its foundations date back to the Middle Ages. A precisely dated Neo-Gothic building and medieval foundations thus stand side by side as distinct historical points of reference.

Historical context within the wider destination of Soldau

Działdowo’s Old Town also offers historical context: it retains its original medieval street layout, and a square-shaped market square lies at its center. The town hall in the middle dates from 1796. The Interactive Museum of the Teutonic Order State opened there on August 13, 2013. The exhibition spans two levels; the first is divided into five chronologically arranged halls.

The Teutonic Order Castle in Działdowo is part of the Szlak Zamków Gotyckich, the Trail of Gothic Castles. The Działdowski Jarmark, a recurring gathering featuring culture, crafts and local creativity, adds to the offerings with antiques, crafts and healthy food. Check the specific event dates if the market is important to your travel plans.

The Park Honorowych Dawców Krwi in Działdowo offers a different kind of attraction. Its facilities include footpaths, a treetop adventure park, outdoor trampolines and a stage. Alongside historic sites, paths and outdoor leisure activities offer options for different interests.

Cycling routes and getting there

Four signposted, color-coded cycling routes run around Działdowo. Information boards share local stories and complement the route maps. This combines easy navigation on your ride with insights into the history of the places along the way. Check the route conditions locally before setting off.
