A battle in 1241, a historic watermill and the green-marked Szlak Niepodległościowy trail give Tursko Wielkie-Zagumnie a distinctive historical and natural character. Nearby, the Zamczysko Turskie Nature Reserve lies between Tursko Wielkie and Tursko Małe. For planning your trip, the themes are clearly distinct: local history and the trail in Tursko Wielkie, and the nature reserve in the surrounding area.
Layers of History
Tursko Wielkie is documented as far back as the Middle Ages. One precisely dated event is the battle of 13 February 1241: near Tursko Wielkie, Polish knights under the Kraków voivode Włodzimierz Dunin fought Mongol troops under Baidar. The battle ended in a severe defeat for the Polish side. The year 1241 provides a chronological reference point, while the history of ownership and religion reveals further periods.
Historical records list Tursko Wielkie as the property of Paweł Kołaczkowski in 1508 and of Jan Turski and his descendants in 1578. In addition, the village belonged to the Radziwiłł family estates for many centuries. Towards the end of the 16th century, the heirs of the Tarło family founded a small wooden Calvinist congregation there, part of the Lesser Poland Unity; it was still in existence in 1704. Thus, ownership and the history of a religious congregation sit alongside the earlier battle.
Watermill and Architectural Forms
The Tursko Wielkie watermill is classified as industrial heritage and listed as a stationary watermill dating from the 19th century. It was associated with a distillery, a brewery, a sugar factory, a brickworks and an oil mill. This list shows the variety of trades connected with the mill and that its historical significance extends beyond milling alone.
A comparison of architectural forms takes you from the brick roadside shrine dating from 1866 to the wooden roadside shrine on the Szwagrów–Strużki road, built in 1928. A wooden school in Tursko Wielkie dates from the 1930s. These architectural details thus bring together different materials and dates ranging from the 19th century to the 1930s.
Nature Reserve and Hiking Trail
The Zamczysko Turskie Nature Reserve lies between Tursko Wielkie and Tursko Małe. It covers just under 2.5 hectares and was established in 1979 to protect an old forest dominated by lime trees, with elm, hornbeam and beech also growing there. The area is considered a place for observing nature and taking walks. Pentagonal fortifications can be seen there, so these structures, as well as the forest, are part of the reserve’s described character.
The green-marked Szlak Niepodległościowy hiking trail is 110 kilometres long and passes through Tursko Wielkie. This makes it a much longer hiking route than the small nature reserve nearby. If you are planning a hike, check the current route and conditions in advance.
