The largest orchard complexes in the Opatów municipality are located in Lipowa and cover more than 100 ha. This landscape is just one part of the area’s profile: a historic park, a chapel at the women’s home, and a cycling route that passes through Lipowa add other thematic dimensions. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide whether landscape, local history or cycling is the main focus of your trip.

Orchards and the historic park

The orchards and the historic park offer different ways of understanding Lipowa. The park’s old-growth trees include mainly small-leaved lime trees, horse chestnuts, poplars, hornbeams and maples. The park is considered to be of moderate value and is not currently under statutory protection. Its classification as an object of moderate value should be distinguished from its legal status: the park is not currently under statutory protection. The specific description of the trees and the park’s classification thus complement the landscape theme of the orchard complexes.

The chapel and the history of the women’s home

A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa is located at the women’s home named after Saint Brother Albert. The home is run by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. The sisters came to Lipowa in 1846. This creates a clear historical connection alongside the women’s home’s continuing association with the sisters. The chapel and the work of the women’s home give local history a religious focus alongside the park and orchards.

A cycling route as a distinct theme

The Rowerowy Szlak Architektury Obronnej (Defensive Architecture Cycling Route) passes through Lipowa. Its name gives the cycling route a focus on defensive architecture, making it thematically distinct from the orchards and the historic park. If you are considering cycling, this route is another factor to consider when choosing a destination. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Culture in the wider destination of OpatĂłw

The wider destination of Opatów also offers a distinct perspective on urban and architectural history. The Warsaw Gate (Brama Warszawska) is the only one of Opatów’s four historic city gates to have survived. It was built of stone on a square plan between 1520 and 1530. Opatów has also preserved the medieval layout of the market square in its old town. The city gate and the market square illustrate two different aspects of the town’s history: the form of an individual building and the layout of a historic urban space.

Opatów’s church architecture also spans different periods. The Collegiate Church of St Martin is a Romanesque building with later alterations and details from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Bernardine Church of the Assumption of Mary is a single-nave late Baroque building made of stone and partly of brick. The first wooden church of the Bernardine church and monastery complex was built in 1040 on the site of the then settlement of Żmigród. These architectural and historical themes relate to Opatów; Lipowa’s own focus includes its orchards, park and chapel.

For another cultural experience, KrĂłwkarenka in OpatĂłw offers workshops where visitors can learn about the traditional handmade production of KrĂłwka Opatowska sweets. Check before your trip whether the workshop is currently running.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: Lipowa is associated here with orchard landscapes, a park and the chapel at the women’s home; Opatów with urban history and architecture. Direct your search towards the destination whose themes you want to shape your stay.
