Cisów combines a memorial site in the village with historic places of remembrance and a distinctive nearby summit. A special Mass for the Wybranieccy and other partisan units is held every year at St. Adalbert’s Church in Cisów; nearby, a monument and an obelisk commemorate different historical camps. Włochy adds a landscape dimension as the highest summit in the Cisów mountain range. If you are planning a stay, you can group the destinations by their respective focus: religious remembrance, the history of uprisings and partisans, or the landscape.
Remembrance in Cisów
Every year, veterans’ groups gather at St. Adalbert’s Church in Cisów for a special Mass for the Wybranieccy and other partisan units. This means that, alongside the historic memorial sites nearby, there is a recurring commemorative event right in the village. Remembrance of partisan fighting in Cisów can therefore be understood not only through permanently marked sites, but also through an annual religious service. If you would like to combine your trip with this Mass, check the exact date in advance.
Two historic sites nearby
Two nearby places of remembrance refer to different periods. The monument to the insurgents from Colonel Karol Kalita Rębajło’s unit was erected in the 1930s at the camp site of the January insurgents of 1863/64. General Józef Hauke Bosak also stayed there. The insurgents’ cross, which had already stood at this site before the Second World War, was re-erected there in 2023. At Kwart, an obelisk commemorates the camp of the Home Army unit “Wybranieccy,” one of the region’s largest partisan units. Partisans under the command of Marian Sołtysiak Barabasz were stationed there in late 1943 and early 1944.
When visiting, the historical traces can be clearly distinguished by period: the monument and the cross refer to the January insurgents of 1863/64, while the obelisk refers to the partisan camp of late 1943 and early 1944. This distinction makes the historical significance of each site clear without combining the events into a single story. For travelers interested in regional history, it highlights a specific difference between the two memorial sites.
Włochy and the Cisów Mountains
Włochy adds a landscape perspective. The summit reaches 429 m and is the highest in the Cisów mountain range; it is also part of the Crown of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. It lies near Cisów, about 200 m from the hiking and touring route. This elevation and regional distinction make the summit a clear point of reference for planning. A trip to Cisów can thus focus on cultural history or mountain scenery, depending on which aspect matters most to you.
Choose accommodation based on the places you plan to visit
Consider which location makes sense for your actual visiting plans rather than treating every site as being right in the village. If you are planning to attend the annual service, check the date in advance; for the memorial sites, it helps to understand the historical period each one represents. Włochy is a separate landscape destination.
