Sarnów combines a rural setting with a layered local history. The wooden Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, traces of the former German colony and a stop on the Gen. Władysław Eugeniusz Sikorski Cycling Route offer concrete points of interest during a stay. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a trip focused on culture and scenery, these themes may influence your choice of destination.

Forests, fields and streams

Sarnów is one of the places whose location between large forest areas is considered to give it scenic appeal for tourism. The wider surroundings are also rural in character: the villages of the Gmina Tuszów Narodowy, including Sarnów, lie among fields, copses and forests. Streams run through the area, and good roads connect the villages. The landscape is therefore not limited to a single viewpoint, but is part of the character of the municipality.

Two interregional transport routes are also important for getting around the municipality: the Mielec–Tarnobrzeg–Nagnajów road and the Dębica–Mielec–Rozwadów railway line cross the Gmina Tuszów Narodowy. Together with the cycling route, they give a picture of the municipality’s different transport corridors; the local landscape and its history remain the main reasons to get to know Sarnów better.

A wooden church with layers from different periods

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built in 1833 as a Protestant church for German and Austrian colonists. Today, it is Sarnów’s Roman Catholic parish church. The wooden building is constructed using a log-building technique and has a single nave; the chancel is narrower than the nave. These terms also describe the building’s essential features: a single main space and a narrower chancel set apart from it.

The furnishings, too, bring together elements from different periods. The painting on the main altar is traditionally attributed to the 17th century; fragments of Baroque carvings on the altar date from the second half of the same century. The baptismal font is attributed to the 18th century. Two side altars are considered works of folk art from the second half of the 20th century. The church, then, cannot be reduced to the year it was built: its architecture and furnishings point to different periods in its history.

Memories of the colony

Sarnów is considered a former German colony, with buildings from the 19th century still standing. An important landmark of this history is the former Protestant cemetery. Graves of colonists who founded Reichscheim—the place now called Sarnów—have been preserved there. The link between the historic and present-day names makes the cemetery a particularly vivid part of local history.

The former Protestant school building is another historical trace: it is now used as a vicarage and dates from 1888. Together with the former Protestant church, it tells the story of the community’s development without requiring any one building to represent its entire history.

Cycling through Sarnów

Sarnów is a featured stop on the Gen. Władysław Eugeniusz Sikorski Cycling Route through the Gmina Tuszów Narodowy. The route is suitable for families with children as well as experienced cyclists. It also passes agritourism farms, forests and educational trails in the Mielec Forest District. The Protestant cemetery is also included on the cycling route, bringing local history and the route together at a specific point.

In Sarnów, a rest shelter stands beside the OSP fire station on the Babulówka River. A historic fire pump is located next to the shelter. This stop combines practical route guidance with another local detail. When planning your trip, you can therefore weigh whether the church and the history of the colonists, or cycling through the landscape, should be the main focus of your stay.
