Building history and heritage conservation in Lubaczów

The castle-and-park complex preserves the oldest traces of a castle site on the Sołotwa and Lubaczówka rivers. It also evokes the former small-town buildings made of wood and stone. Different aspects of local history therefore stand side by side in one complex: the castle site and its former built environment. This offers a way to explore Lubaczów’s history that goes beyond looking at a single building.

The town hall stands amid continuous development on the western side of the square. The plastered brick building has an upper floor; its gabled roof, covered with sheet metal, and L-shaped floor plan with an inner courtyard give it a distinctive form. In 2011, the town hall was entered in the register of monuments of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship under registration number A-568. The architectural description and historic register entry highlight two different aspects of the building: its physical form and its heritage status.

Another complex, comprising a church and bell tower, is located on Grunwaldzka Street. It was entered in the register of monuments of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship in 1988 under registration number A-316. Unlike the town hall, the focus here is on the church and bell tower as a unified ensemble. The two historic register entries date from different years: 1988 for the complex on Grunwaldzka Street and 2011 for the town hall.

The epidemic cemetery also preserves architectural and commemorative history. Its stone tombstones come from the stone-carving workshops of Brusno Stare, which were active until the 1940s. They form part of the folk-art heritage. Those interested in the craftsmanship of tombstone design will find here a different way to explore Lubaczów’s history than through its public and religious buildings.

Park, museum and more history in Lubaczów

The park in the castle-and-park complex is a place for relaxation and recreation. It hosts cultural events and educational activities about the history of the region and the Kresy of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Muzeum Kresów in Lubaczów presents permanent and temporary exhibitions on the Lubaczów region and the former Kresy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Their focus differs: the park combines relaxation, events and educational activities, while the museum explores historical themes through exhibitions. Details of current exhibitions may change; check the museum’s latest visitor information before your visit.

More architectural history in the broader Lubaczów destination

The Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Lubaczów was built in 1883 to a design by Ukrainian architect Wasyl Nahirny, on the site of an older wooden church. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The presbytery has a three-sided end, and a dome rises above the crossing of the nave and transept. Its history thus traces the transition from an older wooden building to Nahirny’s design; the floor plan and dome create a different architectural accent from that of the town hall.

The railway buildings offer another perspective on Lubaczów’s architectural history. The railway complex on Kolejowa Street consists of the station building and a water tower. In 1990, it was entered in the register of monuments of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship under number A-359. This extends the scope beyond town halls and churches to an ensemble of railway infrastructure. These different types of buildings offer culturally minded travelers several historical themes to weigh when choosing the focus of their stay.
