Jedlicze can be explored through its history and built heritage: the present-day parish church traces the story of several church buildings, while the parish cemetery brings named family graves together with a communal memorial. Other points of interest include the park around Pałac Stawiarskich and the Chlebianka Reservoir. If you are planning a stay, you can distinguish between architectural history, remembrance and waterside landscapes rather than reducing the town to a single attraction.

Church Architecture in Several Stages

A wooden church in the Vistula Gothic style stood on the site of the present-day parish church from 1598; it burned down in 1712. After the fire, Remigiusz Wielowiejski had another wooden church built in its place. It was dismantled in 1931. The wooden building from the town’s early history should not be confused with the present-day parish church; they belong to different building phases.

Construction of the present-day Church of St. Anthony of Padua began in 1911, based on a design by architect Jan Sas-Zubrzycki. It was built in the Neo-Romanesque style from brick and dressed stone. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross: a transept crosses the longer main section of the building. The towers are 65 metres high. The floor plan describes the spatial arrangement, Neo-Romanesque refers to the style, and brick and dressed stone are the building materials; the tall towers add a vertical dimension to these features. The style terms alone illustrate the changes between building phases: Vistula Gothic characterises the earlier wooden church, while Neo-Romanesque characterises the present-day parish church.

Remembrance at the Parish Cemetery

The parish cemetery adds a specific place of remembrance to the architectural history. It contains the graves of Laura Pytlińska and Zofia Mickiewiczowa, the daughters of Maria Konopnicka. A mass grave commemorates 22 unnamed patriots who were shot by Germans in February 1943. The two forms of remembrance differ: the family graves foreground names and family relationships, while the mass grave centres on the number of people buried, their anonymity and the date of the executions. In this way, the cemetery connects personal family history with collective remembrance of a specific event.

Park and Reservoir

Pałac Stawiarskich has a park. This adds a distinct parkland attraction alongside the church architecture and cemetery. The Chlebianka Reservoir is known for large catfish, zander, carp and grass carp. These fish species give the waterside theme a specific character and set the reservoir apart from the buildings and places of remembrance. For your travel plans, these offer different points of interest: historic buildings and memorial sites on the one hand, and a body of water with clearly named fish species on the other.

Explore Jedlicze According to Your Interests

When deciding whether Jedlicze is right for your trip, the contrast between architectural and commemorative history on the one hand and the waterside setting on the other is a useful starting point.
