Zatwarnica can be explored via a trail with a clearly named summit destination and through traces of its local history. The “Hylaty” Nature and History Trail leads from Zatwarnica to the 1,004-metre summit of Dwernik Kamień. It is 12 kilometres long and marked in green. The trail length and summit height provide two concrete reference points for planning: one describes the route, the other its destination.

The Hylaty Trail and the Ecomuseum

The “Hylaty” Nature and History Trail is the main feature of the “W Krainie Bojków” Ecomuseum. The Ecomuseum begins with the “Chata Bojkowska”, a reconstruction of a dwelling traditional to this Carpathian region. The Chata has been adapted as a local educational and cultural centre. The trail and the house thus have different emphases: Hylaty is the Ecomuseum’s central trail, while the Chata combines a traditional house form with an educational and cultural function.

Mill traces and water

Zatwarnica’s former milling activity is reflected in several specific features of the landscape. Clearly visible remains of former mills have been preserved along various sections of the Głęboki stream; the Hylaty Trail also passes the remains of a former mill. A small waterfall lies above the confluence of the Hylaty and Ryka streams, in the bed of a former millrace. The mill remains along the Głęboki are spread over several sections of the stream; by contrast, the former millrace determines the waterfall’s precise location. This makes it possible to understand the area’s former milling activity not only through surviving mills, but also through a landscape detail.

Local history and remembrance

The history of the former village is also rooted in specific places. Alongside several generations of Boyko villagers, Polish militiamen who died in 1946 are buried in the former village cemetery in Zatwarnica; a simple monument marks their burial site. The regional history room in Zatwarnica focuses on the history and events of the surrounding area, legends passed down from generation to generation, and the surrounding natural environment. Its oldest exhibits are several hundred years old. The cemetery and the history room thus represent different approaches: a specific place of remembrance on the one hand, and historical, narrative and nature-related themes on the other.

Key considerations for planning your trip

When planning your trip, it helps to keep the different scales in mind. Hylaty is a 12-kilometre trail marked in green that leads to a summit whose height is given as 1,004 metres; local history, by contrast, is encountered through individual traces and themes. If you want to make the trail the focus of your visit, it provides a clearly defined route to plan around. If you are more interested in cultural and commemorative themes, the mill remains, the former village cemetery and the regional history room offer other perspectives on Zatwarnica. The Chata Bojkowska complements this perspective with its reconstruction of a traditional dwelling and its educational and cultural function. When looking for accommodation in Zatwarnica, it is therefore worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay.
