Brzegi Górne can be understood through two different nature trails and tangible traces of the former village. On the “Połonina Wetlińska” nature trail, the route changes from the red trail to the yellow trail; the “Berehy Górne” dendrological and historical nature trail passes through the area of the former village. The cemetery and site of the former Orthodox church add a historic location to the perspective offered by the trails.
Nature trails with different routes
The “Połonina Wetlińska” nature trail follows the red trail from Berehy Górne to Przełęcz Orłowicza. From there, the route continues along the yellow trail to Wetlina-Stare Sioło. The trail colours divide the route into two sections: the red section reaches the pass, and the yellow section continues from there toward the named endpoint. If you want to understand the route, you can use the change in colour and the sequence of place names for orientation. The name of the nature trail and its endpoint are two different points of reference.
The “Berehy Górne” dendrological and historical nature trail has different points of reference. It leads from Wyżniańska Pass to Wyżna Pass and through the area of the former village of Berehy Górne. The trail has 18 stops. Here, the passes, number of stops, and area of the former village are the main features; on the nature trail, the colours and the section via Przełęcz Orłowicza indicate the route. These specific features make the difference between the similarly named nature trails clear.
Traces of the former village
The “Berehy Górne” nature trail preserves traces of former manor buildings as well as the foundations of the church and a cemetery. This offers several layers of historical perspective: alongside the church foundations, the manor and cemetery traces emerge as further aspects of the former village area. The focus is therefore not solely on the former church, but also on other structural traces that form part of the trail’s historical emphasis.
Cemetery and orientation
The cemetery in Berehy Górne lies north of the former Orthodox church and is surrounded by a low stone wall. The cemetery and church site are on a hill beside the red trail to Połonina Caryńska, within Bieszczady National Park. The Wetlina–Ustrzyki Górne–Dwernik road junction is about 200 m away. Different points of reference complement one another in locating the site: its position beside the church describes its immediate surroundings, while the hill, red trail, and junction place it in the wider area.
Only eleven gravestones remain in the cemetery at present; conservation work may change this number. Several gravestones were made by local amateur stonemason Hryć Buchwak and decorated with an archaic geometric ornament. The number of surviving stones and their ornamentation convey different details: eleven describes the current total, while the ornament is a design feature of several individual stones.
Trail route or local history?
If you mainly want to distinguish between trail routes, the red-to-yellow sequence on the nature trail and the named passes on the “Berehy Górne” nature trail are useful guides. If you are more interested in the history of the former village, its 18 stops, structural traces, and cemetery take centre stage. This lets you focus your trip planning on either the trail routes or the historical features of Brzegi Górne.
